I can't think of a better or smarter use for welfare, besides when you pay your taxes this is what you are paying for. What I mean by that is one day you may need government assistance. The fact is you have a right to government assistance because you pay it forward. So when people get creative with government assistance I say "good for them" at least that money isn't being swindled away on some oil war ponzy scheme. No matter where the dollar goes it always ends up right back the pockets of the people who own them all. So might as well use it to enrich your mortal existence while it is in your hands.

Wow, what an interesting philosophy of life - to spend one's early adult years, when you have the energy and intellectual flexibility and capacity, to learn productive skills that will serve you and your community well through your lifetime, instead, on the dole, self-indulgently goofing off, and "parasiting" off the productive sector of society. And those that do, likely spending the rest of their lives wondering why others with greater competency and better skill sets are offered better paying or intellectually more rewarding positions and angry at the "unfair" world....

Makes sense to me....

Welfare should only be used by those that really need it; Large Corporations!

We now have that 40 year history of that generation and what happened. This was the generation that was going to change the world, bring peace and harmony back, live off the land.

That was what they said. They went on to shave their beards, cut their hair, put on suits and dresses, switched to disco and dress codes, then proceed to back the conservative right wing movement, start evangelical Christianity, have their free spirits broken by the hostages in Iran, backed Ronald Reagan and George Bush with their change of the CIA into a covert operations agency rather than just a surveillance agency, supported the CIA introducing cocaine to the American mainstream in exchange for weapons for the Contras, start confused military operations in Grenada, Somalia and Lebanon, leaving totally unstable regions, and we're only getting into the 80's.

Now, this generation is entering their 60's and 70's, sour, grumpy, constantly complaining, their bodies paying for the excesses of several decades, still blaming the government they created for all their problems.

There are thousands of non-sour, non-grumpy baby boomers you could name, but just a few to get started:

Bill Gates - computers & philanthropy
Paul McCartney
Bill Clinton - oversaw 8 years of peace and prosperity
Monty Python - still performing
not to mention the people who invented cell phones, computers, all the medical advancements in the last 40 years, space shuttle, internet...

I think the dots you are connecting Pahoated don't necessarily connect and are just regurgitated mass media version of history. Also its a gross generalization of a huge population. That is fine though you can connect those dots because if that is the whole truth and nothing but then the boomers paid off all the social services they used when they put on the grey suits and dumped billions into the economy. That is my point, social service exist to be used. We pay them forward so we have a right to them. I'm not saying I have used welfare or unemployment yet but I am not paying taxes so we can go police the world, start unnecessary wars and spy on our own citizens. I am paying taxes so that one day when I need healthcare or help making ends meet it will be there. If I use that money to go live naked and free in paradise then all that reveals is that I am a bit creative and intelligent. And by the way do you think Hawaii was ever the same for better or worse since the hippies came and did their thing? I think they were perhaps the most positive part of the American occupation of Hawaii. It wasn't the military presence. The hippies left less of an impact and more or less blended into the communities and landscape of Hawaii. More or less they blended into the culture in Hawaii and have added to the economy of the islands.
