If you have forest, you have rats. It's about how many ways do you attract them to your home. Living here is a little different. Rubbish cans should have lids, no plastic bags of rubbish laying around. When I feed my dogs they have 20 minutes to eat, bowls are picked up (believe me, they are empty because they know). Free-feeding just attracts rats, roaches, ants. They love anything edible. I have dogs in a fenced yard and they present me with a neat little "played with" rat at the back door once in a while (dead).
Yes, where is Baja? Everyone has graciously provided much insight and advice. Hopefully, it has been helpful [:p]

i wish our dogs would catch them dirty rats. only once has one of them done so. the chicken food is what "our" rats are after. there's always food in the coop and on at least two occasions, a rat has been spotted in there. oh, wait. they did manage to wipe-out all the little developing kabocha squash. maybe they're after the eggs? one of our rhode island reds has started to lay.
we don't have roaches or ants. lots of moths, though. no rubbish laying around and rubbish cans have lids.

I have removed BAJA's access. BAJA is one of several noms de guerre of an individual removed from the forum.

Even so, it does not take away from the usefulness of ideas shared on this thread. There were some good ones, and it was kept very civil - well done all!

I thought the whole exchange to be full of useful information.
Tom, I take a dim view of leveling attacks on PW at people who are not able to defend themselves here. Please break the habit.
