Quick Introduction and a charged question...

There is a way to hunt in Hawaii without a license,.....you just need fins, mask and a spear, and plenty experience.
Watch out for the tigers though Bullwinkle, they usually only like to have a bite, just a taste,..problem is their mouth is kinda big.

Great hunting for moufon, axis deer, pheasant, turkey and other small game on Lana'i. Laau point on the western tip of Molokai is a favorite of mine for axis deer. Unfortunatly one of the best hunting areas in the state (western end of lana'i) is about to be developed into a huge windfarm to supply power to the energy eating monster of Oahu.
Check out www.friendsoflanai.org a great site, concerning the use of these hunting lands for the windfarm.

you are right about the tigers - nasty , nasty disposition I hear - dont pee in the water they can pick it up 20 miles out (rule one of ocean survival school) and maybe you will be ok..... grin

Largely, until I find a job (no luck so far) I'm going to he sticking to the hunting area on stainback.

If I weren't staying with the in laws currently, I'd offer everyone to come to a BBQ if I get a pig lol.

Someday though...

So, ARE there areas set aside for hunting? How about hunting on your own land? Could I invite people over to hunt on my land?

You can invite people to hunt on your land provided it fits within the other laws, Ie safe to do so, not in city limits, etc. Granted, check with the sheriff or fish & game.

There are a few areas the state set aside for hunting though. Google Hawaii hunting regs, and on that state page there are maps for all the islands.

Perhaps, Alaskana, since you seek employment, you should consider starting your own firing range in Puna.

I am still in Santa Cruz, California. We have been planning a move to Puna for the last couple of years. My husband will be bringing a couple of guns. One, a shotgun that he inherited from his grandfather. My husband is not a hunter, but when our son (who doesn't hunt either) is visiting from NY, they, plus a friend or two, go to the firing range and shoot targets. It could be a good business[Smile]

I've been debating it, but have neither the funds, legal clout, or beginnings of a location.

Still, would be nice. Always dreamed of having my own shop. *shrug*

Hmmm....

Seems somewhere in my internet searches, there is something about Hawaii having special programs for creating new businesses. Worth looking at.

There was information in the Hilo Living blog: <http://www.hiloliving.com/Starting a Business in Hawaii.html> If the whole url doesn't work go to the <http://www.hiloliving.com/> and Starting a Business is in the left column links. There is lots of information at this site.

It may or may not be worth your while. I am just surprised I have some information about where to get that kind of information[Big Grin

Good luck, either way!

There is a shooting range in Hilo, near the dump & the race track.

Hunting lic, most do not bother with (HI has always had very low #'s of licenses issued - this is a double edged sword for hunters, as low lic. #'s also equals less say when hunting issues are addressed, esp on regulatory issues these days...)

There are many areas for hunting, and a lot of game to be had, inc. many bird species, goats, pig, mouflan sheep (no deer here, but there is axis deer hunting on Maui) All of the hunting stock has been brought here, and there are some hunting clubs for rifle hunting (many take down pig with dogs & knives, but that is not utilized by most hunt club on island.

DLNR has some good info on hunting, and there a few hunting stations off of Saddle & even in Pu`u Wa`wa.

ETA: the Trap & Skeet in Hilo is run by the county, through the Waiakea Park, info is on pg 2 of this pdf link:
