There was a follow up story on the news about the fly the homeless to the mainland program.
Apparently the program is not going to begin anytime soon, because of concerns that it may encourage people on the mainland to buy a one way ticket to Hawaii, thinking they can always count on free return fare from the state if they want to go back:

I find it morally unacceptable to be doing this for a monetary gains.
I find it even more troubling that a politician complaining that the homeless are getting 700 a month while she is probably making 1/4-1/2 million a year. I don't think I could comment on poor people knowing how well I had it. It's like the house or senate complaining about their free healthcare that they get.
I am pretty certain that most likely less than 3 people from the big island will take advantage of this. Most of the homeless are on Oahu. If I were homeless I can almost guarantee I wouldn't be living on the big island.

One-way tickets are only about 15% less than round trip tickets.

You gotta remember, politicians have no scruples, morals or souls. They think they actually earn what they get.

Turns out the State will not be buying any plane tickets.
The bill, as passed, says the State may send the homeless back. Not shall but may, so after the public outcry, they're abandoning the effort.
I wonder where the $100K allocation will go, or if it will "help" any of the homeless...

There are ton of cities struggle with their indigenous population of homeless people, whether it's attempting to get them into jobs and housing or into care as needed. Some are attempting a different sort of solution, specifically getting any homeless people or families willing to leave and having a place to stay somewhere a ticket out of town. More places are
relocating homeless people that want to leave.
