Contractor suggestions? How to choose!

How would you go about choosing a residential contractor for a modest home? What have your experiences been? Anyone you would suggest? What should we be cautious of and what should we be asking when we visit with a few.

We have a small but lovely piece of land at the 1800 foot elevation on the east side and would like a respectable small home put on it, something that the neighborhood would be happy with. It is relatively level if there is such a thing on the side of a mountain and it has lovely growth on it that I would wish to disturb as little as possible.
