This device doesn't eat as much and you don't have to clean up after it.

I knew someone who lived in NYC in the early 80s (when most of Manhattan was a war zone) whose Dad installed a homemade version using a motion detector as the trigger. It worked so well she almost was evicted for violating the no pets part of her lease.
The machine Obie listed doesn't provide any companionship though, which is the best part of owning a dog or two, unless you just can't stand other living beings, in which case the electronic box would be perfect.

I would love to have a dog and miss the ones I had.My circumstances don't permit having a dog.
A cheap but effective deterrent that I had involves a motion detector security light mounted inside the house. No burglar is going to stay inside your house with 2 150 floodlight bulbs shining on them.It also had a rather large klaxon horn wired to it.The horn could be heard for a mile.

Sorry to hear that Obie, life is just better with a dog, they are always glad to see you and research shows they are good for depression and high blood pressure.

I had a devoted dog for years and he was a good protector too. Heartbreaking when he died... but I was free to travel in ways I could not with an animal to care for at home.

My daughter was staying with us for awhile with her dog and I had forgot about all the dog hair....everywhere...but I got a new vac that I needed anyway. But it reminded me about the hair thing. A lot more cleaning but I love dogs so it probably is worth it. And Rob, the traveling thing is really a big deal. So we are not actively looking for a dog.

We've got the best of both worlds: two great, loving and protective dogs, and a responsible, trustworthy house/dog-sitter when we're gone. It helps that our sitter is like family, so we have a high level of comfort.
