My father, although he may have passed early in life did live a long lasting life.
He once told me when I was a young man(25) that I was a good man, also that I would make an even better father. Now having 5 beautiful children later, those words revisit me everyday as I am constantly learning.
He shared those words of wisdom with me as we were both sitting 3 feet away from Akaka falls, I do mean the water that is about to fall some 400 feet. We would sit facing the ocean, with our backs to the snowcaps of Maunakea. Had these incredible jumps into some breathtaking waters Behind the Akaka falls. We would climb up the highest jumping area ,look at each other and say to eachother "jump now or crawl back down like the dog you have been." To leap with faith, be reminded how precious every moment was, as we were descending 40 feet, and end with a sense of rebirth. I truly miss my best friend, my father. He is still living though a bit differently.

Thanks again Opihikao, for such a wonderful thread.

gypsy69, mahalo for sharing that memory. It is wonderful to reflect on those who molded us into who are today. We can only hope to pass onto our keiki and mo'opuna the same "backbone of steel", combined with compassion for one another.

Have a good evening all.

JMO.

When I got my first job my dad told me "Whenever you start a new job, find an old guy that's been there a long time and ask him how things are done. He will think you less an idiot than the ones that don't ask and he'll show you how to do your work the right way."

This worked for every job I had except teaching. Of course, now that I'm the old guy I look at young people just starting the career and think how much easier they'd have it if only they'd ask.

Just call me Mike
Me ka ha`aha`a,
Mike
