Once again, proving one cannot have/share an open, un-offending opinion here without it getting pissed on ..
Enjoy it while you can Imagtek.

Uh, pog... what are you talking about - is it not ok to express a differing opinion about road safety vs. recreational driving? Is it because I used the word "joyride"?
ps - After this section of dangerous road is improved you can post your new fastest time driving to Kona here:

Did they say who got the bid?
http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/loc...-road-work
"Road and Highway Builders, an affiliate of Texas-based Sterling Construction Co., is the low bidder on a 6-mile stretch above Hilo, and work is set to start in the next few months, the company announced."
Road and Highway Builders was awarded the 50.7 million dollar project to reconstruct/realign Saddle Road between m.m 11.71 and m.m 5.67. If the Option X sub-bid is executed, the project's cost will increase to 56.8 million dollars.
Preliminary construction work is slated to start in late February.

I'm sure that the local body shops will hold a wake for demise of that last stretch of road - I can't count how many accidents I've seen on that stretch of road during the last several years - it's amazing that more aren't killed on that stretch...
The really bad part is just makai of m.m 11. This part is famous for a lot of bad accidents caused by people speeding on the sharp turn.
Roughly about 3 miles will be reconstructed and about 3 miles will be new road. The realigned portion will start around m.m 8 and head makai towards the east and reconnect with Puainako Street Extension at m.m 5.6.

This is terrible. On a motorcycle, that stretch of road is the most fun stretch of Saddle Road this side of Kona. Next they will pave Government road and remove all the ancient Hawaiian walls and giant mango trees because without potholes as speed bumps, drunk/drugged fools will crash into them and sue the state. The Los Angelization of everything everywhere is accelerating.

50.7 / (11.71 - 5.67) = about $8.4M/mile. Nice work if you can get it!

Is this little stretch of land not sacred?
Yes it is, but they've had to prioritize.
Sacred Saddle Road is needed to drive to sacred Mauna Kea.
