Kathy, Open Office works on Macs too (another big thumbs up recommendation).

Kathy, Numbers (part of IWork) should open the excel file also.
From apple website"Open, save, and email Microsoft Excel files from within Numbers." http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB942Z/A

Just save the the file to your desktop, then drag it into numbers for excel or pages for word icon on your dock. It will automatically convert it into the true spreadsheet format. You will need to have the iWork icons on your dock. Then you can use it in the format all the openoffice and microsoft users only dream about!

I had a legal copy of Office with my XP, but it's not loaded on my Mac.
Thanks for the tips.

I try to avoid spreadsheets.
My husband is addicted to Excel; he's a techie and I'm the opposite.

Real estate figures are one area I'd be interested in seeing a chart.

Devany, they screwed up some how. I switch back and forth between MsOffice and Open Office routinely. The only issue I've ever had was opening a power point file with MsOffice that was created with Open Office, and it opened with only minor formating issues. I'm guessing they forgot to save it in a MsOffice format and sent it to you still in an Open Offfice format.

Try Google Apps. Nothing to install and they work pretty well.

Oink I would bet you are right about them not saving it as a Word.doc They eventually saved it as a .pdf and it worked fine.

Dave, are google aps free? Do you use them online and then save the docs?

Back to the real estate issue, in order to get the Feds $8,000 you need to close escrow by November 30th. And Short sales can sometimes take as long as 120 days to close, so anyone interested should be looking right now. You also qualify if you were a home owner long ago and have not owned a home in the last three years.

Devany,

Yes, Google Apps are free to use and you use them online and then save the docs. Google also gives you free storage. This is the way things are going these days. Especially for students who can't afford a whole lot of expensive software. They are getting these new "Netbooks" which are really small notebooks. They have a very small hard drive and are designed mostly for use on the Internet where you can do all of your homework and save it all online. No need for a hard drive that can crash when you can save it all online. Same with e-mail.

As far as OpenOffice is concerned I am not sure if anyone remembers back far enough when OpenOffice was a piece of crap. It is written entirely in Java and until just a few short years ago Java was not terribly stable. The fact that OpenOffice works and does not crash anymore is a good thing. The issue with OpenOffice is that as an open source software it is only as good as the developers who support it for free. And as it is now supported by a company in financial trouble just a few months ago, don't be surprised if support for it gets dropped at some time in the future.
