Growing Food & Chickens in HI
#11
Aloha Jason-
Yes you have all those possibilities at your disposal! There is a huge variety of things that grow well here and yes people got plenty chickens'round here. My question is what is your background/experience in agriculture? The answer to that should help determine how to get started. A person with no livestock experience should not go out and get 30 chickens or 10 goats. A person with no gardening experience should not attempt to all-of-a-sudden take on a massive production.

Some crops that grow great here with minimal knowledge or care are :

UPLAND TARO
SWEET POTATO
KALE OR ANY HEADLESS CABBAGES

Most fruit trees that do not require frost to fruit do well here. Of coarse climates can differ here from one neighborhood to the next, so you might think about what you want to grow and then look into the feasibility of that particular plant or tree.
Blessings!Aloha!

P.S. Many have to use greenhouses for certain crops especially during rainier times. May want to consider utilizing one as well.

Rasman,

After some consideration, I am not getting chickens or any other livestock. Neither am I planning on planting anything. I will be busy working on the house I'm staying in and I doubt I'd have time to tend to the garden.

Plus I am here for 5 months at the most, and it just seems to heavy an investment for such a temporary thing.

Thank you for your response,
Jason
