You are eight times more likely to be killer by a police officer than by a terrorist attack.

The Fund is not the total cost for checkpoint security. That Fund is established to receive the TSA Security Fees and allocate as required by law. But post 9-1-1 the administration didn't want a pay-as-you-use system and opted for a socialized TSA security where all taxpayers (even those who don't fly) will pay for TSA security. Since they didn’t want to scare away business travelers, the fee was capped by amount, segment, and total fund amount. That's why the fund was established to show how much was collected and supposedly stop the fees when they reach the maximum amount that should be collected.

But it doe not represent expenditures for actual security checkpoints, only the fees collected from tickets for security checkpoints.

Dennis,
While those are good suggestions there are those who will always either get the porno scan or the groping, or both. Namely anyone with metal implanted in their bodies such as metal skull plates, knees, or other joints. Also people who cannot lift arms above their heads or are in wheelchairs, or have colonostomy or urine bags get the enhanced pat down. Should these people be forced to submit to this every single time they fly?

Hey, the county's stated goal in spending six figures on furniture is to help serve us all better!

Gotta love them stated goals.**S**

Let's see, eighteen metal blade box cutters and one handgun, yet not one metal detector goes off. No passport, no problem. They do this all the time.

Tax/subsidy/contract feeders don't need help crashing our economy or removing our freedoms. Or do/did they? Nano, nano.**lol**

Speaking of Do Diddly, "I'm A Man" would make great background music at Hilo Int., while they run those scanners.

One more blow against the tourism industry here.

The founding fathers were right.

Help train TSA employees to curb their enthusiasm for "enhanced patdowns"! You can do a public service!

Physically unattractive people needed. Must be exhibitionistic and insensitive to criticism. Bad grooming habits and an aversion to bathing a plus.

Seriously, what if consistent bias on the basis of physical appearance could be documented? I assume that such bias occurs in that if you are sufficiently gross nobody really digs into your "junk". Pair young and attractive people up with less attractive people. Have them each wear similar undergarments, totally harmless so the participants don't get arrested needlessly, but sufficiently different so that they trigger the search.

I am 5'-10" tall and during college I weighed 118 lbs so I was fairly wraith-like. I was trading stories with another similarly skinny guy and he described being searched prior to entering a concert in Boston. The security man felt his hip bone and there were a couple of tense minutes during which the security guard wouldn't let go (of the hip bone). Of course he couldn't get the offending hip out. Apparently thought it was a flask of alcohol.

Carol,
Thanks for speaking up for folks like me (with artificial hips on both sides). I will get groped or nuked every time I fly because I always set off metal detectors...unless I can follow the directive one TSA agent gave (and I swear this is God's honest truth) "can you remove your implants and place them on the belt for screening please." To be honest, I'd rather go in the back room and strip naked and be done with it...

Good point Carol. My wife has a plate in her neck, (fusion surgery) and also has to carry an injectable medicine that requires keeping it cold in a Thermos. We have letters from each doctor, advising the TSA that these things are coming and what they are. Some agents look at the letters and if the alarm goes off they just check the thermos or wand her neck. Other agents tell you they don't care what the letter states. Maybe more consistency from all agents should be required. For example, when we returned from our recent trip, the Honolulu airport was the toughest. I was scanned and back pack searched. Changed airlines in San Francisco, no problems at all and the same with Chicago. When we left from Cleveland, the TSA agent handled the thermos with medicine like a high explosive. While all of these enhanced screenings usually involved something we were carrying it still helps if you don't worsen the situation by wearing things that you know will set off the alarms.

If you stay on the Big Island, and dont fly (reducing your carbon footprint), all you have to worry about is traversing the intersections on Hwy 130.

Edited to add: There may be real truth to my brother saying repeatedly "It's safer to fly than drive to the airport."
