McDonalds in Pahoa?
#11
hmmm so if you over 80 they give you a .25 cent discount? How does that work? Do they ask for ID so they can verify your age? I guess I'm showing my age as I haven't been to MCd's in a long long time! Wink

I think it's kinda funny that McD's is offering an incentive to make older people die faster! Go figure.

Royall...& Iju....OVER 80??? maybe speed limit....

McDonalds is a corporation that does have community relation people... you can vote with your wallet & communication to their Oak Brook headquarters (it does work, but obviously must have a population backing...one persons' wallet or communication can only go soo far).

They do have a selection of corporate franchise designs, so as not to place a totally inappropriate building at a site (but this is more an option for the franchisee...as very few McD's are corporate owned)

They can be responsible for putting in traffic control measures, but only if the community (and county) require it, and best for pre-planning (back to the community planning), so if you are in Pahoa, or care about the development of Pahoa, get active, form the community development group... or not & sit back and watch what happens...

I kind of hate McDs with a passion for lots of reasons, but the bigger issue for me is that Pahoa several years ago was clearly going to grow and could have been a charming village with character that would make people want to visit and spend their $. Instead it just has ugly gas stations and chain stores and as you approach town, it's not appealing at all. If I was a tourist, I'd keep on driving.

It would be funny if it turned out NOT to be McDonald's now that we're all worked up over it. :-)

Whatever it turns out to be, the prospect of added congestion at the post office is scary.

What ever business goes in at that spot of the hi-way is going to have a hell of a problem with people parking there and walking over to the PO!! Going to keep Paul's Towing busy!!

It would be great if a great deli went in there. I've always been impressed by Corti Bother Deli in Sacramento. What a selection they had when I was through there. Had an old country feel to it and wonderful aromas and tastes! AHHHHHH!!

I visit McDonald's every time I am in Hilo for the best deal in the world. The side salad is great....large with various types of lettuce (including romaine, red, etc.) grape tomatoes and carrots. They use Paul Newman's dressings, and the Lite Italian is to die for. For $1.04 (tax included) you get a largish very fresh salad, dressing and croutons. A perfect lunch. You cannot make a salad for that price...especially with the dressing. I always have a few of these salads in my fridge and often jazz them up with whatever else I have lurking around. I don't think that Pahoa needs a McDonald's, but it probably is going to happen at some point.

BTW...stay away from Burger King's side salad. It is small, only iceberg lettuce and they put some awful cheese on it and it is twice the price.

For aesthetics the community can incoporate what is called a CDO, a community design overlay and place them in "Q" conditions on top of the zone. Another way is an HOZ, an historic overlay zone, which is much more cumbersome. However it worked well in Highland Park when Jack n' box moved in and had to make the building in a craftsman style to match the character in the neighborhood. The town of Claremont in S. Cal. used to not allow any fast food restarants or neon signs. I lived there 10 years ago. I do not know if that has changed.

There are 3 different issues here: traffic flow and congestion, esthetics of design and construction matching the feel of old Pahoa village, and the desirability of fast food restaurants in general.

The only one of these that currently has laws and governmental rules covering what can and can't be done is traffic flow and congestion. The issue of aesthetics currently has no law behind it, but some companies will voluntarily try to fit in with the local flavor (Longs sort of tried), especially if the community gets involved early in the process.

Regardless of anyone's personal opinion on the desirability of fast food or McDonalds, you only get to vote with your personal wallet. Our constitution does not allow laws that govern what kind of junk people sell, buy, or eat, as long as food safety and handling rules are followed, so if McDonalds wants to build in Pahoa they can. If you want to patronize them you can, if you don't want them here you can vote by not giving them your money.
