Sizeable Earthquakes in Chile and PNG today
#11
There's some evidence to support an increase in seismicity when the ice caps and glaciers retreated after the last ice age. There is also evidence to support an increase in earthquakes for more local land mass changes, e.g., I know of one case where damming a river to create a resevoir was blamed for a moderate earthquake in an area that hadn't suffered any for a while (but there was a fault line there already IIRC). On the other hand more recent but low level activity in Greenland and Alaska have been associated with glacial retreats but these are swarms of small earthquakes.

Statistically speaking the number of worldwide earthquakes has not increased in recent years. There have been a few more large ones in recent years but nothing that can't be explained by random annual fluctuations.

Some numbers and links to other data: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/e...qstats.php

It really does seem like there have been more frequent sizeable quakes...I grew up in Buffalo, New York, so wasn't really paying attention to quakes when I was younger. It wasn't until I moved to So. Cal. that I was "tuned-in." Now I am so fascinated that I check 'em daily. LOL!

"Climate change DOES cause earthquakes"

Micro-earthquakes in the polar regions don't really make the news, or rate in importance.
Some misguided people think climate change causes real earthquakes, in places far away from the ice.

I have to admit the story about water withdrawing from Oahu due to a large tsunami and buildings collapsing sounds utter bollocks if you don't mind my language. Would be curious to see where that might have come from. How could you possibly pull the water from under Oahu? It's an island that goes all the way to the seabed. It's not like it's floating or anything...

Thats why I said Truth or urban legend? LOL I guess I forgot the smiley faces so people would know it was a joke. I saw some stupid mega-disaster show and it talked about how Oahu is slightly mushroom shaped and the water underneath the "cap" is holding up those portions... But overall my comment was a joke kids!!

Cat - wasn't having a go at you or anything, more the idea Oahu would collapse in the scenario you mentioned. There are one or two mega-disaster shows out there that are probably quite accurate but describe events unlikely to occur in our lifetime (think comet or large asteroid hitting the planet) and there are others that just want to up the ante and frighten people into watching them.

If Guam flips over it will likely send a tsunami toward Hawaii. See, It's Hawaii related.

All the waiters on Guam will then move to Hawaii and steal the jobs. They'll work for free knowing they are going to get large tips Smile
