And now a word from Walter Mitty.
Tiffany Edwards Hunt running for Council

It will be interesting to see what side Tiffany comes down on when the HA landowners met tomorrow.
Will she go with financial transparency and community or will she side with her campaign helpers - Bob and Julie Jacobsen - who along with other board members are fighting this audit of HACA (and I would have always bet before that they were about financial transparency). I am hoping that TEH comes through with the fiscal responsibility side. Even though I have differed with TEH, I suggested to my friend that she contact her because TEH would be a bulldog with a bone! But I guess she is backpeddling... but again this is secondhand info so go to the HACA meeting tomorrow and someone report back if can.

quote:So true, leilanidude. Then in 2012 she briefly worked as Zendo Kern's campaign manager, but not for very long. http://www.bigislandchronicle.com/2012/0...-saturday/

quote:The Herald didn't have any information on the other candidates as of this April article on the island Council races: http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/loc...ncil-seats I would hope so. One reason for critiquing TEH is to balance out her name recognition with those who may have something to offer but don't have a PR machine going already. Perhaps once it is clear that Zendo is not running, these others will kick it up a notch and give the district something solid to talk about. btw, I am not against self-advancement per se. It's more that if someone is running based on a past record of selfless community involvement, it is relevant to look at how much of that was done to build public image or to advance projects that are of personal benefit, and how much if any was done because of pure community spirit.

I think questioning Tiffany's commitment in the context of sacrificing quality family time is a valid concern. This doesn't weigh much against her, in my eyes. It shows her to be human, responsible, and caring.
Her blatant use of typographical errors on the other hand, are a deal breaker. I think someone else, posing as Tiffany, has been publishing a blog and newspaper all these years. Let's elect someone with absolutely no public service record that we know nothing about. The chances are fair that they know how to punctuate.

quote:You said it, not me. As I already said, my comment was only in relation to Ken's claim that she is paying attention to every detail (in his discussion with leilanidude). I would never say that a typo makes someone unfit for office. That is just silly, which of course is why you are pretending that's what I said. I do think a candidate presentation style says something about which voters are being courted, with all candidates, not just Tiffany. When someone who knows how to write correctly chooses not to on something like a crowd-funding appeal, she's not targeting older educated people, rather the text speak demographic or hippy vote. She doesn't write like that on her blog, so she's presenting a different image. Nothing wrong with trying different strategies for getting support.

Why not just present the image of being yourself?

Well, Tiffany certainly has a high profile presence; yet, not much in the way of substance I'm afraid. I did run into another candidate today at the hardware store in Pahoa who seemed capable: Timothy Law. Mr. Law has opened an HQ there in the middle of Pahoa Town. From what I can tell he has a stable temperament, lucidity, is open to suggestions, and has character. He understands the importance of forming a strong alliance with the District Five Councilperson and organizing a voting block. He also wants to find common ground among his constituency, while avoiding the infighting that traditionally weakens this district. He has a pet project or two like anyone else: restoration of Kimu Beach Park etc. The quality that impressed me the most was the calm and dignified way he presented himself. He seems to have the composure and intellect necessary to work with others and succeed.

Snorkle,
To me, careless punctuation, poor spelling, improper grammar, or the use of the oxymoron, are either signs of a less-than-exacting mind, or someone who is appealing to folks of that ilk. I find this to be especially true of someone who represents themselves as a professional writer. There are times when it is appropriate to use casual language, and times when it is not. If we are addressing a group of friends for instance, we tend to be less formal. When addressing the public, however, it's wise to err on the side of formality, its a sign of respect -- self-respect that is. As for your comment alluding to Ms. Hunt's good deeds, we are all grateful for her contribution to the community. A good community organizer, however, does not necessarily make a good politician. To champion a cause for the betterment of the community is a relatively straightforward proposition. Balancing the hopes, wishes, frustrations, and often ignorance of diverse elements within a community requires a degree of self-awareness, which allows you to empathize with those whom you disagree. In the end, autocratic individuals usually do far more harm than good. At least that's what I gather from both personal experience and world history.
