Another Home Invasion in HPP
#71
It's easy to find out how the prosecutors and HPD feel about defending your homes here. I've been to a few meetings with Mitch Roth and the HPD, and they always give the same advice.

#1 Strong neighborhood watch.

Don't have louver windows or if so, know how to burglar proof them.
Don't let people in your house that you don't know and allow them to case it.
Get security cameras and make them visible. Burglars will often move on to the next place.
Gates, fencing, dogs.
Visibility of your entry points to the public and neighbors.
Motion sensor lights trained on key points.
Keep keys near to activate car alarm using panic button.

These tips are given by people who have been fighting crime in this part of the island for years and years, who know the psychology of the perps here.

Not once have they ever suggested using a gun or gone over the legal ways you can protect yourself with a gun, not even with a caveat or a wink wink, not in private consultation (like when they showed up on a call and no one was recording their advice) or in public.

So interpret the law as you wish, but these are the same people you'll be dealing with in law enforcement once you have pulled the trigger and killed someone.

You might think that if the castle doctrine were strong in Hawai'i, that they would feel comfortable in suggesting that a household should have a gun, or that they would give some advice on what to do in a situation where you have your gun and someone is breaking in. But no, they do not talk about it.

Here is where guns do come up at these meetings. Criminals here love to steal guns, and target homes known to have guns, because guns are not so easy for them to get here.

For that reason, it is IMO really dumb to spout off about your guns on Punaweb, if anything you've said about yourself gives information on who you are and/or where you live.

Here's a tip we got from a neighbor who has an admittedly unsavory past: park your cars behind your house, in a garage, or elsewhere where they can't be seen. Thieves prefer homes where people park their car where it can be seen from the street, so they immediately know whether or not somebody is home. If there is never a car there, they'll always be guessing.

We've recently had two suspicious incidents in OLE. The first one, a truck I'd never seen before with a young couple stopped about 30 feet from our driveway so I went out there to greet them. As I approached the truck the female quickly tried to hide the fact that she was snorting something up her nose, so I asked them if they were OK. They said their truck had broke down so I offered them a jump, or I could call a tow truck or the police if they needed. They said that their friend was already on the way. I told them that I would be watching them closely to see if they needed assistance. Whatever drug deal they were going to do, they had to go do somewhere else, and I haven't seen them since. The second time was another vehicle I'd never seen before slowed way down and they seemed to be starring at our house. We were butchering chickens that day and I had just removed the head from a chicken I had bled out, and I was carrying the chicken by the feet, going from the back of the house to the side where the scalding pot was when I saw them. We had been processing chickens for hours and I had some blood splattered on me. I stopped and looked at them, and it took them a moment to notice me. When they did, I held up the headless chicken with the neck stump dripping blood and they quickly drove away.

Poor Pog. Reduced to nonsensical ramblings. Maybe time to hang up the old keyboard buddy.

All this is is a bunch of hypocrites who want to whine about stuff but do no action. Talk a good story. lol My local friend calls you people Wa-Ha. (probably spelled that wrong)

There is some on every forum and Puna is no different.

"Oh no theres home invasions"

But you don't want to do anything about it, some of you guys don't even want street lights, and then have the firkin nerve to talk trash about those that would protect themselves and their family.

If you are too punk to even stand up for yourselves agains punk thieves, you think I care what you say ?

YOU are the enablers. YOU enable thieves to rob your homes. YOU stand by and watch them. YOU let them terrorize your neighbors AND your neighborhoods. YOU give justification to their actions, because if YOU do not care enough to protect your own homes, why should the crack head care if he punches your grandma in the face for a few dollars? YOU are just as guilty as them. YOU have been enabling it for TOO LONG.

Yes, because once people started keeping guns in their homes, all burglaries came to an end. Problem solved.
(PS - doesn't matter what home owners do, there will always be burglars, and they will always try to figure out a way to steal in their spare time, which is all the time, because they don't have jobs)

Sorry brah, completely disagree.

Its a epidemic in Puna. Why? Because there is no consequence. When you have no consequence there is no fear, when there is no fear, people will go beat up elderly people.

Consider the thieves unruly children, and anyone who takes no action is a bad parent.

The thieves will always steal, yes that is true. They need money to get their drugs or what have you. You are spot on there. BUT, they will go to the lowest risk scenario. They aren't brave or ruthless, they are cowardly, that is why they take the path of least resistance, which, up to this point, is households of people who WONT arm themselves. There is no consequence to rob a house in HPP. When there is consequence, they will learn to find quick cash another way. Maybe they go steal clothes from ROSS. Who knows, but I can promise you, let there be some consequence to robbing peoples houses, and they WILL stop.

You think you can teach a mouth breather drug addict anything? Nope.

What no one is talking about here is pressing our illustrious police department to get on the ball and put this small number of repeat crooks away. Before 40,000 individual homeowners become a physical threat to thieves and each other.... we have an armed police force that seems to be nowhere to be seen before and after these crimes.

People should stop letting Chief Kubojiri off the hook and get in his face about this stuff. I mean get in his face. Kubojiri is getting paid good bucks to turn in a mediocre performance. Mayor Kenoi too.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Even if one thief a week was shot & killed during a break in - - they still wouldn't know which homeowners are armed and which aren't. It would be Russian Roulette. And even if everyone was armed, they'd just wait until you weren't home.

Mediocre? You're being far too generous.
