Hawaii Life - Puna buyers...

The show is NOT fake, but several portions are staged.

The point was the show is not "reality", not whether it was totally fake. Yes, interlacing beautiful Hawaii scenery, which may not be anywhere near the houses being shown, can be very deceiving. But of course, the audience loves it, that is why the show keeps going on. It is this continuing circle of people trying to find out more about living in Hawaii by watching TV shows, developing all kinds of strange misconceptions, then showing up as malahini, saying "well, this is nothing like the TV show" and leaving. Duh. Notice how they leave out the part about finding the foundation is totally termite infested, or that the house may be in a flood zone, or there are neighbors with nine dogs, or the cesspool is not grandfathered or the three or four meth houses in walking distance. It is entertainment, not a research tool.

Let's face it, a real honest to god reality show would be a little like looking at a friends vacation photos.
Nice, but unless they're a pro photographer, a little dull and repetitious after the first 10 or 20.
It's the same with people who aren't actors.
So the program director, writes a short script here, inserts a couple of tropical vistas there, and now you have video that will hold the audience's attention for half an hour.
If they don't, most people will hit the channel button on their remote after a few minutes.

I always liked that old documentary back in the 80's on how to house sit oceanfront properties in Hawaii, "Magnum P.I."

Currently, HGTV doesn't have a repeat of the Puna show scheduled, but it will repeat more than once in 2015. Evan says he believes the episode will be available on-line next week.

There is a big difference between faked and staged. For example, since the order of houses isn't determined until post-production months later, the director asks the real estate agents to say "our first property", "and our second property", "here's the final property" while standing in front of all three houses. In other words, three different intros. That doesn't make it fake, but it is staged. Every business has some behind the scenes logistics that the public doesn't know about. It just makes things flow better. Why get bogged down in the details when the end result is really what a customer wants.
