i'm in upper puna and i had a view. fireworks were going on starting from around 6 in the afternoon. i chose to wait till around midnight to see how intense it got. At 11:50 it started getting good. Many folks must have bought those big professional fireworks and were lighting them off. fireworks were popping in all directions. i could see good displays in volcano, glenwood, mtn view, keaau and hilo, and lots of noise and flashes in the clouds from pahoa side. i wasn't wearing a watch, but could tell when it was a minute or two around midnight. it was just awesome! we watched for another 15 - 20 minutes as it took awhile to wind down. some really good ones were launched in glenwood / eden roc about 15 minutes after the new year, too, for a nice finale.

Guess I'm getting old. I went to bed. I did hear a couple of pretty loud bursts there for a while but didn't get up to look.

I don't mind watching beautiful fireworks from afar. But how grown men get amusement from making things go boom is beyond my comprehension. Just the thought of blowing up all that money...even when their cars need fixing and rusty roofs need repairing...
Not a big deal though, as all places have positives and negatives. I just suck it up over the holidays. Happy to take a little bad with all the good here...although my dogs would beg to differ.
To quote a meme going around; "So long 2014, you've kinda been an a**hole."
Best wishes to all in 2015, and go Ducks!

Bringing in the new year is a tradition of fireworks for most in Hawaii. On the mainland not so much, probably because most of the mainland is cold and snowy. Not my idea of fun of blasting off fireworks in a thick jacket.
It's not just a tradition, but to some, the more you spend on fireworks or the better and louder you can make em the better the new year luck god will come to you.
Altho, plenty of these fireworks were illegal, I'll take em over shooting guns in the air.

Lucky for us the volcano has once again stalled, and this only happens once every 365 days.
Happy New Years to all! I also, saved a bunch of cash, and didn't spend any money on lighting any fire works. I did light the propane stove and water heater a few times. Neighbors next door are busy cleaning up the street and driveways as I type this.

I love fireworks and yes on the mainland many including me have lit off many to celebrate. Many people light them off on the mainland, many are bought on the res where we have got ours before!
That's fine. Its the low brow idiots that appear to be too numerous to count here in Hawaii like my stupid neighbors who shot off illigals into and onto my property on my house without a care in the world. Your right on the mainland is very different, when we would shoot off anything and a bottle rocket landed in my neighbors yard we on the mainland would immediately go make sure it was out and apologize to our neighbors.
That doesn't happen here. I have numerous fireworks in my yard and on my roof today. Its called respect for others something no one has here. On top of one jackass in his mustang burning rubber in front of our house for 30 minutes at midnight. No one here gives a ****. Its not about scaring away bad juju for the new year. Its an excuse to make explosives and be outta control. Not one person is out there cleaning the frikken mess up on the street or in others yard except for the people who didn't light off fireworks last night. All our a hole neighbors are up yes and started lighting off more fireworks and more bottle rockets flying all over since they woke up thus morning and still going on now. I'm over it..

Poor dogs, being subjected to the noise they inflict on everyone else the other 364 days of the year.

We used to make our own stump removal devices with propane bombs,80 percent propane and 20 percent oxygen in a 55 gallon trash bag with a wick of 80 feet of used crank case oil soaked twisted hilo trib.
Covered with tires and tarps.Worked well in stump removal.
At new years though,we just enjoyed others noisy celebration.
Now 1st day of 2015 and no mess to clean up.Just happy to wear a smile with grace.
Happy new year punawebbers.

That's another low brow low mentality thing. Our pups are in the house with us not left to bark 24/7 utterly ignored on the end of a chain or in a kennel their whole lives which is the norm here.
We take care of our animals. I can't believe how many idiots leave chained out barking 24/7. Another example of having no respect for others.

fireworks is part of Hawaii tradition , this year was really big lots of people celebrating . I always confine my animals early in the day and assure they will be comfortable for the night of festivities . the mess left behind ...oh well it gets cleaned up and goes away just like a hangover . its the guns being fired . not good . the rest is only once a year so get over it . Happy New Year

I agree a lot of disrespectful people, nothing worse than a dog living in a box or chained up for it's entire life. But I guess I'm looking at the glass half full and seeing all the folks that "ARE" respectful. Happy New Year!
