new year fire works
#21
"fireworks is part of Hawaii tradition , this year was really big"

Yes that's right. Hawaiian fireworks go back to long before Kamehameha the great. They used to tie hala fibers onto bananas and wait for them to explode. Didn't make quite as much noise though.

"the mess left behind ...oh well it gets cleaned up and goes away just like a hangover"

Another longstanding Hawaiian tradition.... Just like all the broken green glass from beer bottles at the beach. Gotta respect those traditions.

A more recent tradition is celebrating Independence Day. That's American Independence, and it happens every July 4th. Hawaiians have been doing it since 1959, and giving thanks for the day off.

I can only guess it's a tradition brought here from Asia? Perhaps the Chinese, being that they invented fireworks and all? My other guess is that other Asian immigrants would likely have been exposed to fireworks in their home countries. With the large Chinese and Asian population, not surprised it took root.

Just a guess though. Anyone know why fireworks are such a big deal in Hawaii and how far back it goes?

We had a huge electrical storm over our house a year or so ago and two goats died. They weren't struck by lightning, they either died from fright from the booms or some other complication of trying to run away from the gods. You can't do anything about nature. But last night our goats went crazy from fireworks and today at least one of them is sick and her rumen has stopped. (A goat doesn't have to be a "fainting goat" to suffer neurological responses from sudden frights). She may die. Here's an article about 5,000 birds killed due to being frightened by fireworks: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nati...orks_N.htm

Before you chug your "macho sized" beer and get your grunting ready for the big boom sounds your illegal fireworks make, try to think of the innocent wildlife and domestic animals that suffer and die for you to enjoy your boom sticks. But you won't.

Had to take a good dose of meds to keep the monkeys in my head from freaking out like the cats did by running for cover under the bed. Fourth of July is another favorite time for me. (Kidding!!) I am slowly getting used to the fireworks, but gunfire coming from all directions gets them chattering away.
