South Puna is the lowest income area in the state.
That would explain quite a few things.

quote: Overall the county of Hawaii is the lowest. Depending on how you divide the areas (as districts or familiar area names), of the 10 lowest areas, actually Puna only has 6. Pakala on Kauai and Maunaloa on Molokai take the 2 lowest spots. Pahala and Na'alehu in Kau also are in the bottom ten. Surprisingly Big Island also has the #2 highest spot with Puako. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii_loca...ita_income

quote:No, you got to be kidding. Go to Hilo and try to find a cheap rental unit, if you can find one at all. The people on the wrong side of the flow have already taken up most the rentals so when the time comes, they can stay in Hilo to work. Where are the cheap rents but in lower Puna.

"No kidding, especially with all of the affordable rentals that are available there and the dificulty they are having finding renters."
Indeed he is kidding. Just a hunch, though.

I'm grateful to have at least one grocery store in Pahoa.

I don't think it qualifies as a grocery store. More like a welfare "pseudo hippy" superfood specialty hangout with exorbitant prices?

I worked in a natural food store in the late 1970's.
We were told our prices were too high, we were elitist, we didn't carry a large enough selection of products, we were hippies, kids could stick their fingers in the bulk bins - - pretty much everything written here about Island Naturals. There were five natural food stores in our town, everyone had their favorite store for various reasons. After 35 years of hearing slightly differing versions of this discussion I would say: 1)Some things never change 2 It's the nature of the beast

Nah, Keaau Health food store pulled it off well for many years up to the time of the bypass of Keaau. Abundant Life in Hilo is tolerable. Pahoa....no, and what's with all the overly rich desserts at the entrance just past the food bar? Dripping in butter and sugar is a very unhealthy combination. Desserts can be made in a much healthier fashion. That place is strange.

So everyone's more pissed at the overpriced store that stayed than the overpriced store that bailed?
