Douglas Chin, a local attorney and managing director of the city under former Mayor Peter Carlisle, will be Hawaii’s attorney general.

Chin has also worked for 12 years at the city Prosecuting Attorney’s office. He will be leaving his post as managing partner at Carlsmith Ball. He’s earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Stanford University, and a law degree from the University of Hawaii.


“He is able to defend the state in court, facilitate and negotiate agreements, manage a large department and communicate well,” Ige said in a statement. “It’s rare to find someone who can do all those things.”

Doug is a partner in the firm's Corporate, Administrative Law, and Litigation practice groups. His areas of practice include renewable energy and clean technology projects, land use and development projects, government relations, mediation, white collar criminal defense, and commercial litigation. In October 2014, Doug was appointed to serve as a managing partner of Carlsmith Ball.

In a broader sense, maybe what's happening is that HE
realized they had gotten in over their head, financially
and technologically and found a solution to their problem in NEE?

On a side note, Randy Iwase's recent political career is remarkably similar to Gov. Ige's. They both were credible Senators who were seen as worker bees rather than glory seekers. In 2006 Iwase took on an incumbent (LL) who had a massive war chest and the power of the incumbency. However even though LL had major interest groups allied against her she easily swept Iwase aside during the surge of an economic boom. The Democratic party never really rallied around his candidacy and he was seen as the sacrifice candidate necessary to keep the partys pride of place.
Ige's campaign had many of the same circumstances but most notably the state was just coming off a long and trying recession. With the challenge coming in the Primary the specific interests within the party were able to leverage their strengths against an incumbent who had assumed too much .

Doug Chin will be an interesting AG in the sense that he comes from a long stay in the Prosecutors office and then a 4 year stint as Managing Director of HNL C&C. I hope he can manage the D.A.G.'s as successfully as he prosecuted the ne'er do wells of Ewa and Waianae.
