Nearly all of that was for legitimate business travel but about $9,000 was spent on personal items, such as a $900 night at the Club Evergreen in 2013 and $400 at the Camelot Restaurant & Lounge in 2009.

The key legal term is "intent." Prosecutors have to show that Kenoi knew or should have known that what he was doing was illegal. Kenoi said he never intended to break the law and did reimburse the county for his questionable expenses."

"I was under the mistaken impression that as long as I made payment, took responsibility and did not shift that burden to the taxpayer that it was okay," Kenoi said earlier this week.

Harry Kim interviewed in one of the newspaper articles, I can't find it at the moment, claims he rarely ever travelled during his terms as mayor, "there was no need to rack up such expenses". To the contrary, Mayor Billy travels often and stays in 5 star hotels on our dime. It will be very interesting to find out the agenda of all these trips, especially those including high tab bar bills courtesy of the Big Island residents.

Somebody once said, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". I think he was corrupt even before being voted in as mayor, well actually there was convincing evidence he had mafia ties we all read about in the paper. Who would vote someone like that in?

Oh, here we go again; "Mafia ties"?.

Are you referring to the Kalapana Hawaiian Mafia that was allegedly responsible for framing the hippy dude for murder awhile back? Or the Kalapana branch of the Soprano syndicate?

I would think both Kalapana Hawaiian & Kalapana Soprano. He is mayor of the whole island after all.

The curious parts for me, not much discussed:
No credit card, really?
Mauna Lani Hotel, checkin & checkout on same day? That's one expensive changing room, or an hourly tryst. On our dime.

http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2015/0...conferece/ dunno, I think I wouldn't have put myself on the line like that, but c'mon? He doesn't have a credit card?????? Sounds like a bit of a loser. Also... He looks worse coming out with this than just letting things cool down. I think I'm a leaning on I hope he get's fired for his actions.

I wonder who paid for the plane ticket to Oahu for his lame press conference to explain all this? Cynical little me thinks the taxpayers probably did.

Kenoi's lack of a credit card can only due to bankruptcy or a very bad credit history. His income as mayor would certaily qualify for one.
