TMT groundbreaking - live
just turn the mountain around so that TMT is only visible from Puna

This made my day. Thanks. I'm glad that someone can maintain a level of detachment and invoke humor.

A different perspective from a Native Hawaiian:

speaking of questioning whether the Hula festival artistic spotlight was exploited by fancifully irate political and activist agenda...

"Kalakaua’s interest in modern astronomy is evidenced by his support for an astronomical expedition to Hawaii in 1874 that came from England to observe a transit of Venus (a passage of Venus in front of the Sun – used to measure an ‘astronomical unit,’ the distance between the Earth and Sun.)"

for what it's worth, here is what the Merrie Monarch himself is recorded saying to the visiting astronomers:

could it be true?... [:0]!!

-----------------------------------------------

King Kalakaua:

“It will afford me unfeigned satisfaction if my kingdom can add its quota toward the successful accomplishment of the most important astronomical observation of the present century and assist, however humbly, the enlightened nations of the earth in these costly enterprises…”

-as quoted in the Pacific Commercial Advertiser, upon arrival of a British expedition of astronomers to Hawaii

Q: Are we not Mauna Kea?

A post so nice I had to read it twice!

"There is this recent protester statement being made, why not build it in Chile like the European telescope. The first reason is Chile is not America and American astronomy wants the big discoveries to come from its observatories, which they have almost daily now."

Jeez, it would be so much better if you were a protester. Your arguments for science are so damaging. I'm not even going to address the rest of your post because it started off so badly.

The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), a US telescope with international partners (like the TMT), is being built in Chile.

Before I forget:

Gemini South and the LSST, both in Chile.

This is not an argument to justify the TMT being built in Chile, astronomy needs a large telescope in the northern hemisphere, just to show once again Pahoated posts utter nonsense and does not speak for the science community.

From Brian Kuwada;

" So I thought it might be useful to post a picture of the telescope that George Tupman, the expedition's leader, used to observe the transit because...well...it's little. It was set up with all of their other equipment in what was essentially a backyard. There were also two small supplemental observation stations, one in Waimea, Kaua'i, and one in Kailua, Kona.

What is more interesting to me than Kalakaua's words is how Tupman referred to Kalakaua and the other members of the royal family as "savages" and "intolerable nuisances" for wanting to have the telescope opened up to the public to look through, with Kalakaua even offering to send down the Royal Hawaiian Band to play. Check the article (written by an astronomer) from the Hawaiian Journal of History to see for yourself

Of the many related threads I've read on the topic, this is the first that DEVO has played a role, so points for creativity! Of course the other side might just thrown down some Thomas Dolby setting off a new wave smackdown.

PW might not be keeping up with developments (Native Hawaiian advisory councils walk-out on 8 UH campuses, #WeSupportTMT social media counter movement) but at least we're boldly going where no one has gone before.
