Well, My husband is one the one who is wanting to live poss. the Puna area,or Hilo. Since he is a carpenter it seems that most of the work is in Kona so....We will see. I just like the Hilo side because it's more "jungle like" We stayed in Kapoho while we were on our honeymoon and that was awesome!! But so far way from everything. I miss the hot ponds and the champaign ponds. Great snorkeling or scuba water your into. Kona is a little too crazy for me,lots of people on the streets,reminds me a litle of the Pike Place Market in Seattle.Hilo area is very nice.I liked it myself(husband included) But I guess everything is beautiful in it's own way so Kona is a little drier and Hilo the wettter side. Not alot of diff. though,sice the rain ,at least while we were there lasted 5 minutes and was wonderfully warm-unlike the cut to your bone rain here in WA. state. Just my opinion- Aloha- Lisa
Coming to Hawaii!! Yeah!

There is plenty of carpentry work in Hilo, I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. We have trouble finding good guys. I work for a contractor, e-mail a resume to emily@jemerk.com if you want to.
The Hilo side is wonderful! Kona is nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
We are up in Mountain View - 2,000 ft elevation. It's nice and cool nights and mornings. We had 248 inches of rain in 2005. It's nice and quiet. The best part is I can take the Stainback Highway into work and there are NO stoplights the whole way! It's far better than taking the I-55 into Chicago! Oh, the best part is the weather. The best part is the ocean and the hiking and the views - Ok, you can tell I think it's pretty nice here

I bought in Seaview aka (Kalapana Seaview Estates) and didn't really consider anywhere else because at the time, I bought it sort of just in case when prices were much lower, thinking someday we might want to build a vacation rental or retire there in 30 years. After visiting my lot that quickly became, let's build in 5 years, which became let's move in 5 years! And now it's getting harder and harder to wait that long. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase because it has an ocean view, has a beach within walking distance, doesn't rain too much, is not in the jungle, everyone I've met in the neighborhood is friendly and mostly recent transplants. Although the neighborhood has the potential to get more crowded, the area still feels very much away from it all. Although if we end up working in Hilo the commute might get old fast. I guess I'd rather have ended up in Puna Palisades because the lots are bigger, but it's too expensive and a lot of the lots have poor ocean views. The main downside for me in Seaview is that the lots are small (7500-10,000 sq ft) and it seems difficult to plan for a house, pool, and yard space given the setback restrictions and room taken up by a catchment tank and septic system.

Aloha all !
I am Steve, and my wife Amy just got back from Puna again - after several visits, we have bought a lot in Kehena, and are just starting to consider the logistics of moving. Glad to have found your site - thanks for keeping me posted!
We love Atlanta, but can't wait to get to Puna for good! She will be able to keep her job (lots of traveling), but I am going to have to figure something out (I work in a recording studio). I suppose I will just have to do whatever I have to do... although the lottery could take care of that

Aloha Steve, try this;
www.seaweststudios.com They are located in Leilani Estates, between Pahoa and Kehena. Some famous people have recorded there. Who knows, maybe you're just the person they're looking for.

Lisa,
If your husband has not found a house yet, check
http://www.ginozarealty.com
Carol has 3 4-bedroom houses and 1 6-bedroom house listed now. She has managed our 2 houses in HPP (neither is available) for 16 years and is very good to deal with. You would have to ask her about pets.

They do have some nice listings, but they have a no pet policy on all their rentals. It seems as though all the property management companies have that same policy. Thanks anyways for the info.
Aloha,

Mark,
Contact Carol Ginoza and ask her if the owner is willing to waive the no pets policy if there is a particular house you like. You would probably have to put down an additional deposit, but we did it for one of our past tenants. It would be up to the owner of a specific house. With the limited availability of rentals, it may not be likely, but it is worth a try.
