Who on this forum has never drove on a privately owned road on this island, that wasn't in their own subdivision?
Occasional driving to visit friends on private roads is one thing, creating a semi permanent detour through HPP in a none emergency situation is not the same thing.
If the people of Hawaii County want to use HPP roads as county roadways they just need to lean on the county to take ownership of those roads, or make a fair and equitable deal with HPP to cover the cost of wear and tear. Otherwise you are asking the people who pay gas taxes and road fees to bear the cost of you having a more convenient commute.

Precedent: Lots of people use the non-emergency permanent detour through Hawaiian Acres; it, too, was created with sleight-of-hand.
As long as the "privately owned" roads are also "open to the public", the owners of those roads have no say in how much, or what kind, of public.
Didnt know you guys had become a gated community!
Exactly this: if HPP really wants control of their roads and who uses them, they can install gates. Otherwise, they can quit whining about "how County screwed them over". All the "private" subdivisions got screwed.

So what you are asking for is free use of private property to make your drive about 5 minutes shorter.
I did not realize that HPP was a gated community!
You have no rights to our roads, we pay for them. Don't like it? Go and whine to the "Emperor new Clothes" Kenoi!

Fine. Everyone stop cutting through Hawaiian Acres, effective immediately.

We always thought that if DOT had lowered the speed limit through there to 25 MPH - no need a round about .
But then again - no common sense in any level of Govt .

I hope people understand that not everyone in HPP is like this. I found it hard to comprehend when the same arguments were being made during the lava flow emergency. I know it's not quite the same, but whatever happened to neighbors helping each other?
Johnd, if you really feel this way, how about organizing a protest and throwing rocks on the road so no one can use it? Seems a legitimate protest strategy in these parts.

"Two to three times as much would be a bargain, when you consider what's called night shift in Puna generally starts with drinking and ends with sleeping. Might also result in either an oval-about or ellipse-about."
I like the idea of a squareabout with two-way stops on each side (or make them three-way stops to quadruple the confusion). I swear people will visit from all over the world to experience it thereby benefiting our tourist industry. Build a nice hotel nearby with views of the chaos, and you're quids in.

PS. For anyone at the DoT reading this, I'm joking, just in case you get ideas.

complain complain complain
the way this post turned from the roundabout in Pahoa,.. to HPP nimby kooks taking over... again
.... is the EXACT reason why HPP leads the league in materialistic mainland NIMBY idiots that should never have picked Puna to relocate too!!!
homeless?? No, WE need to give these HPP kooks a free one way tix back to Ohio, Texas, and Florida,,, but we need to water down the roads in HPP first so their new SUVs dont get all dusty on the way to the barge 'home'
