All HPP needs to do is build their own schools and corner stores inside the subdivision, that way they never have to comingle with the unwashed hordes.
Don't forget the gates on Shower*, Kaloli, Paradise, Maku'u, Beach, and Railroad just for good measure. We don't mind a little co-mingle now and again, as long as it's only when we leave the subdivision.
* When Shower Drive stop light is installed it will need an extra long left turn arrow on Hwy 130 from Keaau direction. To allow each driver time required when punching in key-code at the gate.

The first couple of times I went through the detour, I noticed that the temporary signal had a long red/short green pattern on PVR. Today, it seemed to have a longer green. Maybe they changed the timing. The backup wasn't bad at all Friday afternoon.

Good to hear. I was kinda surprised that they hadn't closed PVR like they had during the lava and route people through the P.O. Rd.

There was another horrible, multi-vehicle accident at Shower Drive tonight(four ambulances). As I crept by in the long line of traffic I saw a fire truck parked sideways in the road, and a guy hosing off the intersection. My wife arrived at the scene before they towed off the cars and told me it looked like someone turned onto Shower from the Pahoa-bound lane and .... As bad as the situation on 130 is, increased traffic in and out of HPP seems pretty dangerous. It's every man for himself out there during the commute; I never seen anyone get a ticket. I wonder what it will take for the County to take some responsibility for this escalating mess?

How about the State for designing such a BS roadway and then failing to implement even basic standards of drainage (BTW-Pahoa bound, past the transfer station it continues to pond during heavy rain), restricting the second lane to ludicrous days and times, not installing a longer turn lane at Shower, etc, etc.
But you know what? I turned on the Oahu news last night and watched the live traffic report. I felt better about stupid highway 130 within minutes...

Increased police presence would pay for itself in fines to say nothing of safety. It's too bad that people can't self-monitor. It's getting to the point where we're seriously considering buying a condo in town because drivers have so little regard for human life.

lo and behold I wonder who or what has pissed off the County so much that they won't do a thing for HPP
Don't flatter yourselves -- County won't do anything for any of the private subdivisions, of which HPP is just one.
Nor do I think there was any "pissing off" involved -- the whole thing was by design, it made plenty money for a few people back in the 60s, and it would have worked out just fine if nobody had actually tried to live here.

Mazie Hirono's office says that, from this year through 2020, Hawaii will receive over $1.3 billion in federal transportation funds -- $261 million for public transit and nearly $1.1 billion to improve infrastructure.
Big Island's "fair share" would be 15%, so $165M; at a construction cost of $1M/mile, that's 165 miles of roads, or 33 miles/year through 2020.
Problem solved!

keep up the whining, complaining, grumbling, finger-pointing, mainland twitch reaction, then fewer and fewer people will try to live here.
It would be less entertaining that way.

the deadliest intersection in the galaxy
Are you being sarcastic?
Implying the danger at the intersection was just a Phantom Menace?
