A bill to raise the speed limit on Saddle Road
#51
+1 Justin,

Under speed ( limit or otherwise ) drivers >>> Just edge over when its safe and let people by ... Simple as that ... Absorb the good vibes from doing this and go on with your own pace. This is one scenario where it's better to have your 'troubles' in FRONT of you : )

aloha,

I've never had 5 or 6 cars behind me, unless it was rush hour... My post wasn't specifically aimed at you, so relax and chill... you'll live a little longer! Smile Road rage isn't worth it! Getting all worked up into an "infuriating" rage because grandma is driving in front of you isn't going to do you any good either. Relax and enjoy the ride! Lucky you live Hawaii 'eh brah??? Remember to stop and smell the pineapples --- along the way!

This is my problem Eric - the road is for getting from point A to point B not for lollygagging. If you want to cruise around and smell the pineapples, please be courteous to those of us who actually have things to do.

When the Mrs. and I were touring the countryside in our Winnebago we were always aware of rush hour and made sure that we were not on the road at those times clogging up the commute.

Lucky I live Hawaii does not mean I have all day to drive 5-10 under the speed limit. Lucky I live Hawaii means the cost of living is high and people need to work to pay rent.

I know it's a free country and all but perhaps you could save your cruising time for the red road and not the highways.

+ ! AGAIN.

The irony here is the ones who insist on driving LESS than the speed limit ( and to hell with everyone else ) no matter what, are oblivious to the dangers they are creating.

-1. Classic straw man fallacy. Try again.

In many places there is a minimum speed limit. If the max is 50 the min is 40 and so forth. In that case you are doing the speed limit if you are driving 40 mph. You are not "under" the speed limit.

I find it helpful to think of it this way: if someone really wants to get a speeding ticket, I'll gladly help them achieve their goal -- better them than me.

The difference is 10 minutes if you drive an hour at 60mph or 50mph. If someone is driving the speed limit and you want to risk a ticket at 10mph over, you will save about seven minutes. So on the more normal 20 to 30 mile ride, you might save two or three minutes by speeding. Take traffic and lights into account and you can actually lose time. I can't tell you how many times I breeze through the light at Keaau Pahoa Rd and there's the guy who passed me ten miles ago just starting to accelerate out of the light.
Leave yourself a little more time, drive without pushing the person in front of you and live a little longer from less stress.

PM2 I could rest my case on your reply alone.

Some will never get it.

You guys can preach, warn, do some math + toss out all the cliché reasons you want but the bottom line is you are being inconsiderate of others by purposely driving less than the speed limit when others want ( dare I say need ) to get by. There is a common sense, understanding between "less" and "under" the speed limit for most people.

I say "most" because we are even having this discussion.

Not every driver who wants to get around you fits into a stab and steer, tailgating, must be reckless, stereotype box.

I pass as often as I am passed, but am typically tailgated coming down Saddle Road into Hilo. Typically I"m going 45, the speed limit is 35, and somebody is 3 inches off my rear bumper. It's dark with lots of curves, so I can't see a good place to pull over until I'm almost on top of it... which means braking hard, which a cannot do because of the idiot 3 inches behind me. If I slow down enough to pull over safely, the guy behind me gets pissed off. If I don't pull over, he gets pissed off. If I go faster, we all die.
