Trucks with 40 foot containers won't fit...
..130 should be 4 lanes all the way to Kalapana
...lawsuits to follow.
It would be cheaper to build a 4 lane bypass around the roundabout. A private toll road so it's completed in this decade.

Trucks with 40 foot containers won't fit around the roundabout with their turning radius.
No problem, they can just use Railroad or Chain of Craters, and pass the fuel surcharge along...

At the same time, the road will be wide enough to allow trucks and construction equipment to navigate the curves. Sniffen said that DOT designers had worked with Sanford’s Service Center, located next to the Pahoa Marketplace, to make sure it was designed for truck movements.

You can fit a semi thru the intersection ! At Parking Lot Speed ! With no other traffic!
There needs to be a second access to lower Puna if this thing gets jammed up.
And they need to do it before Harry Kim gets reelected because his plan was to permanently evaluate lower Puna and ( direct quote from the news paper ) " those people can go back to wherever they came from "

PAHOA, Hawaii – State transportation officials faced a large, frustrated crowd at the Pahoa Community Center on Thursday evening. The bureaucrats were besieged by questions about the new roundabout project, as well as the dire need for contingency plans on the often congested Highway 130.

Thanks for posting this, Opihikao. The most interesting part for me was seeing Russell Ruderman try to calm the crowd when the organizers, Inouye and Ilagan, had apparently frozen him out of the process for political purposes. I'm finding more and more reasons to want our senator to be re-elected, and I never thought I'd say that.

Yes it's fun to send an outsider to the capitol and really stick it to the establishment. Consensus however, is a key ingredient to getting things done legislatively speaking.

And what has consensus with a chronically dysfunctional good old boy establishment got us in the past? Not much, that's what I see when I look around.
