TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo

Thanks for the update, Opihikao, I wasn't aware of the latest lawsuit. I think this just helps confirm my opinion. Even if the TMT/UH are successful with the contested case hearing, there will be too many other delays that mean, for scientific and funding reasons, the TMT won't be built here. Of course I hope my opinion is wrong, but it's getting harder to imagine how it'll happen.

Good God, Mr. Tom. OHA can't even take care of basics, never mind, the TMT matter. First they support TMT, then they rescind support (stopping short of being against the project), and now this?!?!?! Land management (ie. Kaka'ako, "working with" DHHL, etc.)? OMG, I am speechless. SMH.

Note the timing; election period. So hewa! When OHA (specifically, Bob Lindsey and CEO of OHA, Kamana'o Crabbe) went up to Mauna Kea with "concern for the protestors/protectors", it was all a precursor to the entity created in the article above, with no results....yet. Hell, they can't even have meetings of substance!

Such a damn disappointment. Again.

JMO.

P.S. If you are able to read the entire article, it states our "Princess" (not mine, for the record) Abigail Kawananakoa, (who is suing OHA and the State and the UH) is supporting OHA in this effort. What a freaking hot mess.

Thanks, Opihikao.

It's behind a paywall and the last time I paid a small amount to get access to one article I ended up with evening phone calls from the advertiser for a month. Never again.

PS. Just thought you'd be interested; I don't consider anyone in the UK's royal family as "my queen", "king", "prince", "princess" or anything like that. They don't represent me and I don't represent them. It appears we have similar principles.

Yes, Mr. Tom, agreed (as to no one is King/Queen/Princess today. A'ole.). Here is the quote from the article above (Her "Highness" speaks):

Another TMT foe, Campbell Estate heiress Abigail Kawananakoa, said she can support OHA’s move.

“It is evident that the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the University of Hawaii are incapable of handling their responsibilities,” she said in a statement. “Though OHA has been mismanaged since its inception, it is based in the Hawaii Constitution and is the only official organization we Hawaiian people have to protect our interests. I shall give my full support to this endeavor.”

SMH. Good night, Sir. Time to reflect and contemplate. Rest well, and warmest aloha to Pam, as always.

This article may be free to read, just not sure if it contains as much info as the article they want folks to pay for.

First link for some reason didn't work, hope this one did.

This one is from last year and the comments after are great. Billions may have been spent in other countries on air conditioning, something many of our island public school students still lack.

How much electricity would be needed to operate large Telescopes like the TMT? More than a school or two full of air-conditioned classrooms for the Keiki?
Would several large air conditioners really have to run all day so that the observatory equipment will function properly?

That's not an article but news articles about everything. Thanks, but no thanks.

Since the money to operate the TMT would not be coming from Hawaii, this is completely moot. How much would your proposed water bottling plant cost and where would that money come from? How many schools' A/C would it be equivalent to?

there will be too many other delays ... the TMT won't be built here.

I'll believe this if/when TMT announces the location and/or breaks ground at the new site.

How much electricity would be needed to operate large Telescopes like the TMT?

How is this even relevant?

More than a school or two full of air-conditioned classrooms for the Keiki?

Without TMT revenue, expect a tax increase to pay for this. (Expect the tax increase anyway, but hopefully it's less severe if the revenue base is allowed to expand.)

This is the part you snipped opihikao, it seems important so I added it :

"While OHA points to the UH management flaws noted by the state auditor, OHA has been the subject of similar criticism.

A September 2013 state auditor report notes, “As of February 2013, OHA owned or leased 28,206 acres, making it Hawaii’s 13th largest landowner. While these numbers may be impressive, we found that the OHA’s land management infrastructure is inadequate, unable to support the office’s growing portfolio nor any future land involvements.”

Kealoha Pisciotta, a leader of the Mauna Kea Hui petitioners, said OHA’s effort is news to her. and she’s surprised the agency didn’t reach out to those who have been trying to stop development on the summit for years.

While she agrees that the state and university have failed Mauna Kea, Pisciotta said she’s worried OHA’s motivations are political."

Mahalo, Obie. OHA does fail miserably in management; all areas of management, and land management being one of the biggest failures (Kaka'ako is a prime example).

This suit is a total political move.

Waiting for the update on the next Contested Case Hearing set for August 5th (continuance requests, etc.)

Yes, which point has been hammered many times -- it's a bit like saying "don't buy a computer today, everything in the store is obsolete, tomorrow's computers will be 10x the speed for 1/10th the price" -- which ignores the fact that sufficiently advanced technology is already available, and there's work that needs to be done today. Sometimes an existing, well-understood technology is better than waiting around -- future technologies will always be "better", if you don't mind not getting anything done "now".
