Mayoral Candidates
#61
HiloPuna,
I appreciate your apology, rare in cyberspace these days. In a place where so few people vote, and many of those who do make their choice based on sign waving and shaka throwing ability I appreciate anyone who care enough to pay attention, even when I disagree with their conclusions or choices. I wish at least half of the mayoral candidates had had the self restraint not to run, they just create so much background noise I had to look up Drake Weinart to figure out which one of the bozo brigade he was.

I guess I'm leaning more towards Hoffmann...

Lau is too connected to billy...
Kim -- Probably second choice ... But he just wants his "old" job back so, he can do his "old" job again which was pretty much no change.

I am hoping someone can switch things up... and maybe break up the old boys club network.

I doubt it will happen and I who knows if who I vote for will have any chance at winning. It's really hard to find someone that is smart and can get things done. Oh well...

I just asked for a new ballot, after returning from vacation, the envelopes are all sealed.

Funny thing about Lau and the pCard scandal: according to the County org chart, pCard abuse was happening both "above" (Kenoi) and "below" (Departments, notably including Liquor Control) Lau.

It's one thing to say "I have no idea what my boss was doing because he didn't tell me anything" -- entirely plausible.

It's quite another to claim "I had no idea what my direct reports were doing".

Lau "coulda-shoulda" made an example of pCard abuse at Liquor Control, thereby sending a message to his boss while demonstrating both integrity and concern for misuse of public funds.

As the moderator of PW says, "Assume the best and ask questions."

I was surprised/curious when I recently saw on http://www.harrykimformayor.com that Harry Kim "Served in the U.S. Army as a medic during the Vietnam War."

Harry is 76 years of age, which means he was born in 1940, and would have finished high school about 1958. Then, according to his web site, he joined the Army and later attended Southern Oregon State University.

Being a Vietnam Veteran myself, and knowing others on the island, I sent Harry a Facebook message (I am FB friends with Harry) and asked what were his years of Army service and did he receive the Vietnam Service medal, like I and others did.
No reply after several days.

The Vietnam Service medal was created in 1965, with some awards made retroactive to 1961. Criteria for award is that the person
served in the armed forces between the following dates between 15 November 1960 and 30 April 1975 for military service, in geographical theater areas of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia.

So, I ask the question, when Harry talks about serving "during the Vietnam War", what does he mean?

I still say, if one of these people said they would put a costco in on the hilo side or better yet, grant them with incentives to build one on this side, I'd vote for them! Smile

What one would be the best to vote for based on the above information. I'm still waiting for my new ballot in the mail.

Timelines do seem off.

After serving in the military as a medic, I was able to Harry Kim's Grandsonattend and graduate from Southern Oregon University with BS in Education and an MS in Economics thanks to the G.I. Bill. From the Star Bulletin link:

Kim went to Hilo College for two years, served in the Army as a medic at Schofield Barracks, and used his GI Bill benefits to finish his education at Southern Oregon University

Education: Hilo High School, 1957; Southern Oregon University, B.S., 1966; M.S. 1967

If he graduated in 1957, went to Hilo College for two years, he could have been in the military anytime between 1960 and 1964, most of those years were during the Vietnam conflict:

"Served in the U.S. Army as a medic during the Vietnam War."

Seems to add up to me.

The moon kind of surprises me sometimes. I’ll be out at night and I’ll see a nice moon, and say, “Hey, that looks good.” Then I’ll say, “Oh sh-t, I went up there one time!” Kind of surprises me.
