Not sure about how I fell. My right foot slipped, and I kind of started doing the splits. My right foot may have gone toe pointed out as I went down. I think most of the pain is on the outside and a little forward of my right leg. Range of movement isn't so good. If I try to get up off the couch, I have to keep the right leg straight, bend the left, and pull myself up with the cane. Walking with the cane, again, left leg must be straight. If it bends, the pain hits me, and there's a real good chance I'm going down again. I still don't think I could try to shoehorn myself i to a car.

The knee itself still has a lot of swelling, and a little bit of bruising. This is no fun, but, at least I can get up and do a few things, unlike a back in jury I had in my middle ages.

We have Ibuprofene, and I'm taking that. Just sitting though, I'm not in pain.

Once you are able to get a bit of motion, one of the best rehab exercise for the knee is to sit somewhere that your leg can hang off an edge and swing. The back yard lanai works for me. The drop off is far enough that my feet cannot touch, and just swing it. Gently at first and try to work your way up to the full range of motion after a couple of days of this, two or three times a day at least for ten minutes. It helps to have something to read when doing this, time passes quickly. I've had a few twists myself with my days of basketball and tennis. Happy healing Birdmove.

Airportparking, I don't want to compare knee injury/surgery stories with you, but believe me, I've got them.
I disagree with promoting circulation the day of injury but you go ahead if it works for you. To each his/her own.

Thanks for the time on the swinging leg exercise! I will try that when I'm able.

When I was about 56-57, I was able to do a good amount of inclined leg presses at the gym. I joined that gym when I was just turning 50. I could work up to 6x45 pound weights on each side. There were big dudes that could certainly do more, but, for a guy that age at about 175 pounds, I thought that, 540 pounds, was pretty decent. Later, I had to cut back, due to a left ankle problem I still have, and when I tweaked my right knee kicking over a motorcycle that was out of time, and kicked me back hard. The later was about 2009.

I haven't decided if I should even go d=see a doctor about this. I thought I'd wait and see if it starts getting better on it's own. Does that sound reasonable?? My wife says she could help me get into a car if needed, with a little technique she knows.

Hmmmm...not so sure, but a couple of days to see if swelling goes down before going will help. My only worry for you is if you tore, or slightly tore your ACL, but after a few days rest and still hobbling will be a good clue, but an X-Ray will give you a definite. Speedy recovery, and maybe keep a pile of throwing rocks by the door outside will work next time, while improving your pitching skills in the process.

Since you asked, I'd advise doing what your wife thinks you should do.
As a Nurse, she has the knowledge and skills to assess injury, and she knows YOU.
Even more importantly, who knows your body better than you? If YOU think you need to see a Doc, go!
No matter what you decide, take it easy !
We look forward to your recovery!

For what it is worth: a coworker had a similar fall, she tried to avoid going to the Dr. but things just didn't get better, with similar symptoms as you describe. When she finally got into the bone Dr. it turns out she had broken her tibia, because it was not set properly right away, and because she had tried to walk on it multiple times over the course of a week, she ended up with more than one surgery and steel pins instead of a simple splint and 2 months of no weight on the leg.

Hi Kenny, Ice YES > I meant immediately AFTER injury or hard therapy. Once swelling is stabilized so to speak, after that no reason for ice.

THEN bring on the heat later. Birdmove, try the Aleve. And DO NOT put weight on it 'till you get to DR. Could also be torn meniscus or damage to your tibia plateau.

You gotta get X-ray and have specialist look at it. At least you will know and that's a good thing.

Does your car have a backseat ? Just flop in backwards and sit sideways.

Well, I got my first ambulance ride a couple weeks ago - Happy 65th birthday. So post broken nose, lacerations & 2 weeks recovery, I thought about prevention; an older friend asked me where was my head when I fell? My thoughts were on my next errand, dinner, phone calls, everything but where my feet were. Painful lesson: keep my head w/ my feet, in fact that's my new mantra. Oh, & I got a slingshot at Harbor Freight & my aim is pretty good at those chicken eating dogs. Hope you have a speedy recovery w/ no long term damage.
