HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Here's a look at the closures and changes announced as Hurricane Madeline nears the state. The hurricane is expected to start impacting Hawaii Island on Wednesday, and could bring tropical storm conditions to Maui County late Wednesday into Thursday.

Schools

The state Department of Education is expected to make a decision Tuesday afternoon on which schools to close on Hawaii Island.

Meanwhile, the following Hawaii Island public charter schools have announced closures.

Kua o Ka La New Century Public Charter School in Pahoa will be closed Wednesday
Connections Public Charter School in Hilo will be closed Wednesday and Thursday
Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science Public Charter School in Pahoa will be closed Wednesday
Recreation Areas

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will close the entrance station and visitor center on Wednesday. The coastal lava viewing area and Chain of Craters Road will also be closed.

Two models show it goes North, two shows it goes south, and one shows it goes straight through the center. NWS agrees with the southern models.

In what’s being hailed a meteorological first, two back-to-back hurricanes are marching toward Hawaii, both of them threatening torrential rains and rip-roaring winds this week. The closer of the two, hurricane Madeline, could break a second meteorological record as the first hurricane to strike the Big Island since bookkeeping began in 1949.

Rumbling west at approximately 9 mph, Madeline is currently packing Category 3 windspeeds of 120 mph. Its latest track has the storm passing south of the Big Island on Thursday, although as meteorologists Bob Henson and Jeff Masters point out over at Weather Underground, it’s too early to rule out the possibility of landfall on the island of Hawai’i. In any case, the storm is expected to bring heavy rains and 40 to 50 mph wind gusts to the island later this week. A hurricane watch is in effect for Hawaii County.

No quite "In what’s being hailed a meteorological first, two back-to-back hurricanes are marching toward Hawaii", as just 2 years ago, in 2014, Hurricanes Iselle & Julio were following much the same storm tracks.... but they were never CAT 3s, as Madeline & lester both have been.... so there is that
