TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo

Here's a drawing of a Mo'oinanea.

The Polynesian Family System in Ka-'U says that there are stories describing marriages between these lizard creatures and humans. A mo'o could "conceal its true nature"; the skin of the unlucky spouse would "become like that of a fish", covered with slime when wet.

In oral testimony, Kealoha Pisciotta said she also wanted the "shape shifter" to be allowed to "testify" in 2011.
quote:
I would like to speak in support of Mo'oinanea petition as Mauna Kea Anaina Hou.

[...]

She's unlike other type of spirits that are wandering here and there in another form. She has a body to her. She can transform into a full human form at times, or she can transform into a full mo'o form at times, or other times she can also transform in part human and part mo'o part, she has that ability of transformation.
Then right before a break Eric said:
quote:
In rebuttal, Mo’oinanea is not a deceased spirit.
There is different types of spirit in the natural realm, elements. She is not a deceased person. She is actually a living entity, a living individual. She does have human blood in her, and so she is not a deceased.
In a letter dated May 3, 2011 to BLNR Eric requested a waiver of the $100 filing fee for Mo’oinanea, claiming financial hardship due to unemployment of Mo’oinanea.
quote:
Mo’oinanea is not employed and neither does she
receive any revenues generated from the leases and
activities on the summit of Mauna a Wäkea.
Therefore, it would be a financial difficulty and
hardship for her to file this fee. Therefore, this
a follow-up request to waive the filing fee for the
Mo’oinanea petition. Mahalo nui ba for reconsidering
this request in the essence of aloha ‘ama.

I can only hope that when or if I reach 70, my mind is still as sharp as Richard Ha's. It's particularly ironic that someone with the memory and intelligence equivalent to that of a downed utility pole has a problem with Richard's testimony.

100% agreement. Whining, like I do, on PunaTalk is pretty lame compared to PUEO and Mr. Ha who actually do something.

Kudos to PUEO and I hope it makes a difference.

A quote from everyone's favorite, Kealoha Pisciotta:

"When I worked up there, I didn't necessarily see it as a conflict, as I come from star people. However, where the conflict began is when the landscape began to be dominated by human [constructions] and it was removing the space for sanctity and reverence. Since 2001, our position has been no further development."

And Kalani Flores:

"It's a divine connection to other life forms on other star systems. Our ancestral knowledge is actually embedded in the sites up there—it's imprinted and can still be activated."

I'm fuzzy on the whole star people thing but will hopefully eventually understand the utility. On the whole it seems like sound reasoning to oppose a telescope though.

Yes, like having a TV to connect with other forms of life, but being opposed to an antenna, cable, or god forbid, satellite.

Aloha all.

Of note, this link provided by "quasar" (mahalo), no one has discussed yet; the testimony of Wilma Holi, the Hearing Officer's witness (Judge Amano).

Mrs. Holi has attended the hearing each day, and is greeted by Judge Amano every morning. I was not aware that she would be Amano's witness, which was a very intelligent decision on Amano's part.

Mrs. Holi is a "cultural expert", and very knowledgeable in areas most will not discuss (*"Kapu" information/experience, as it were). She is Kupuna, in the true sense of the word, and her message is clear.

It would behoove some on this forum to listen...carefully, to her words. You may not understand, you may disagree, you may not grasp the entirety of her position. Nevertheless, in my view, her mana'o is pure truth, and of our Kupuna.

Mahalo to Big Island Video News, and Na Leo TV for their continued coverage.

For what it's worth.

I almost fell asleep during her testimony about airline and car rental arrangements, but the revelations on teleportation, levitation, healing, and signs from the gods via hearing a song while on the loo... Those were enlightening.

opihikao,

You are the OP and I sometimes imagine you as Judge Amano since I have a tendency to imagine pleasant things while watching the meanderings of the hearings.

You obviously feel strongly that Mrs. Holi's testimony was important. I watched half of the long vid and all of the bigislandvideonews vid. Perhaps I am wrong to post without seeing _all_ of the long vid...

However. You state: "You may not understand, you may disagree, you may not grasp the entirety of her position. Nevertheless, in my view, her mana'o is pure truth, and of our Kupuna"

Since I am a big fan (not) of "pure truth" I must say that I am at a loss to see what any of the testimony actually has to do with the TMT. I admit that I am likely not to grasp the entirety of her position.

Still, I am hoping you can specify which moments of the testimony and/or cross examination would be swaying to someone, as myself, who considers that the crowning tech of centuries of scientific inquiry, and the crowning tech of several nations who put their money where their mouth is, should be banned from the best planetary site for its construction.

All told, I watch the "contested case hearings" and wonder what the point is. To give anyone, anywhere, anyhow, the status to "question" anyone, anywhere, anyhow? And then what? Judge Amano gets to rule what?

I suspect you may dismiss my queries as is your prerogative, but I very much wonder if can can turn me in the better direction on this whole thing.

Cheers,
Kirt

+1 Kirt. Speaking for myself, she seemed to be rambling stream of consciousness style about things like the flames of a fire seemingly blowing opposite the direction of the wind and that being a sign of something. First, such an observation on her part would not carry much weight with me or anyone who respected science anyway. Second, I may have dozed off as she droned on but I don't recall her ever saying " and THAT'S why the TMT shouldn't be built"... Maybe I should have inferred it since her nonsense sounds the same as that of the "protectors" but if her goal was to win over people who were on the fence, well she wasn't a very compelling witness. In fact as I listened to Pisciotta repeatedly saying "Uh-huh" dozens of times I began to wonder whether she (Pisciotta) was regretting the exchange and whether this wasn't some veiled sort of revenge on the part of Amano for having been forced to sit through all of this herself. I have been on the phone with people where I wanted to get away but felt I couldn't and I said "Uh-huh" with the same frequency.

Bottom line is I listened to an hour's worth, through the end of Pisciotta's questioning, and I don't remember anything except the bit about the magic fire. Granted when I heard THAT I was ready to chuck the whole "world's greatest telescope to be used to advance science for the benefit of all mankind" thing...

Not.

ETA: The next questioner did specifically ask her whether she agreed that the TMT should not be built on Mauna Kea. She agreed that that would be fair to say. At times she seems almost combative, making statements in response to questions from which the answers must be inferred which often led the questioner to pointedly ask her again for clarity. One of her statements was something about the grandson of Noah. I didn't catch the relevance of that.
