the hitchhiker pulled out a knife... He then took some of the victim’s personal belongings, ordered him out of the vehicle, then left with the victim’s truck...

It's not mentioned in the report, but let's hope he at least smelled good.

For what it's worth I pickup hitchhikers quite often and only once has it been a nose full and the others have all been pleasant. No knifes or pneumatic nailers. We usually have an interesting conversation. Some are travelers, woofers or just locals down on their luck. Sometimes they give gifts for a thanks, usually fruit, never been offered pokololo though.

Just a reminder, it's illegal to drive around with a gun in your car. If someone pulls a knife on you, let them stab you and then call the police (once off of the back roads and in range of a cell phone tower). And wait for them to find you.

And now a moment for our Saturday morning reality check:

I've lived on the Big Island since the last century. I've picked up hitchhikers, I've never been stabbed, robbed, had a gun pulled on me, or was asked to change the radio station from NPR to rap.

It's the thousands of other drivers aiming 3000 pounds of metal a few feet away from me daily, traveling 50+ mph in the opposite direction from which I'm headed at 50+ mph that's my main concern. Not the four violent hitchhikers who make the police blotter every year.

You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

Thank you for the reality check, Primal Edge. Stuff like this is anxiety building when really, Hawai'i is a paradise.

Maybe the whole thing is just a clever ruse by Uber or Lyft to disable the Puna's original ride hailing service - hitchhiking. It's hard to make a profit competing with drivers who give rides for free (with occasional tips). Wink
