quote: I'm shocked that your gibberish is all about defending people who were clearly negligent by not only failing to leash their animals but also allowing them to menace another person, and then finding fault with said person's response! This might be understandable if they were your dogs, because I've noticed that dog owners frequently have the misguided attitude that everyone else should love their pets as they do, and that the animals can do no wrong. "Hey, it's not my problem, it's yours". OP handled the situation well, no doubt. Makes me think that anyone walking with kids in such a place would be wise to carry spray, and in the situation described by PrimalEdge, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

My daughter has been bite here in HPP on two separate occasions. She lives in Ainaloa, but used to go on bike rides and jogs from our house. First time, while bicycling, a smaller sized dog ran out of an open gate in a fenced yard, and drew blood. Police were called. They came, took her statement, took photos of the wound, and went and paid a little visit to the dog owners. Must have helped, because they started latching their gate and plugging holes in the fence. Thank you Puna cops!!
Second time was much more serious. She was returning from a run when a large female pit bull squeezed through some where in a brand new fence, attacked my daughter and bite her 4-5 times. Once on the ankle, the others were on her hands as she held them up to try to keep the animal off her. This from a dog owner two houses down. She came into my place, told me what happened, and wanted to call the police. She asked if I new the address. I said no. Grabbed a stout club, and walked down to the street, where the dog came after me too. I was 100% ready, willing, and more than able to cave this animals head in. I stayed face to face with it and yelled at it, and it decided not to mess with me. I walked back into my property with no house number. Little did I know the two gents from next door were returning from there nightly walk. Since this animal was attacking anyone and everyone who walked by, one of them got a nasty ankle would. A neighbor across the street (a retired cop) saw it all, as did a super nice lady in a car. She stood by and waited for the police to come so she could act as a witness. It got dark and rainy and she on her way home from work, but STILL waited. If a small child would have walked by during this, it could have been horrible. Police cane talked to everyone. Turns out the dog owner was the boyfriend of the lady two doors down. She threw him and his dogs the hell out. She contacted my daughter to see if she was all right etc. My daughter chose not to file charges due to: 1. Brand new expensive fence had just been put up. One would tend to think after that, it should keep the dogs in, and 2. She booted the dog owner and dogs out. The lady tried to deal with the aftermath of the mess. I've been attacked when on a bicycle ride on Beach Road, when I had to get off the bike, and use it as a shield between me and the attacking dog, till a neighbor of the dog owner came and got the dog off. On another occasion I was chased while bicycling by FIVE dogs that all ran out of a fenced property through an OPEN GATE, and came after me barking and snarling. I peddled lie a 20 year old and outran them. As a 63 year old that goes on walks, and probably will never be able to run again, or even fast walk, here's my intend. When I go on a walk, I will carry, along with my cane, a weighted club, and knife. If a loose dog barks at me, so be it. If it turns into a snarling, barking dog, then we have a problem. If the owner is there, I will ask them to please control their dog. If they brush me off, or tell me to go to hell, then I will turn and face the dog. I will maintain about a three foot bubble around me as I carefully continue on my. Dog enters bubble snarling, barking, bearing fangs, out come my club and knife. When the bite attempt happens things are going to get ugly very quickly. I fully intend to survive. Dog owners, leash your animals and control them. Simple. Period. I ask you to please control your dog, you threaten me, then I will defend myself as always from your uncontrolled animal. Jon in Keaau/HPP

I have not read this entire thread......but wanted to post a heads up...
Not sure if this is a coincidence or what! We just now left Paradise @ Beach in HPP. It is where we do our morning walks most days. There was a fellow parked on Beach Rd. Red pick up truck, pipes on top. His door was open and he was leaning against his truck. 2 dogs at his feet. One was a white pit bull and the other one looked to be either pit or part pit, mostly brown. I hesitated to walk by.....he reached in his truck got a long rope to tie the white . We smiled and waved. He was Quite mouthy....couldn't make out everything he said, but the "f'in haole" was part of it.....We turned around and left. He was still hollering as we walked away.

He walks every day w dogs. The white one is newish and more nervous/aggressive. Even though the other is not on a leash, he is stays close to man. I thought it was just me/my dogs he disliked.....I always carry wasp spray on case there is an outbreak (biking or walking).....

reni- As eigoya said, the man in the red truck is there every day. I've passed him on the road walking many times. I usually say hi, and he might nod back after he's seen you awhile, but rarely smiles. It's just his manner and disposition. The white dog is a "puppy," and I believe it just recovered from some medical situation. For awhile he walked it in a baby buggy. He's had the older brown dog for a long time. The brown dog has become quite protective of the white one. He maintains pretty good control over the dogs, I've never had a problem, but I wouldn't make any sudden or unusual movement around them either. To me this whole snarly dog thing is a symptom of a deeper underlying disease.... the abject failure of our police department to control property crime and bust out the families of professional burglars.
People get these mean defensive dogs to do what the police won't - protect themselves and their property. The Kubojiri legacy.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Eigoya and HOTPE,
Greatly appreciate your responses. I don't recall ever seeing this guy and his dogs before. Unleashed pitbulls frighten me. Mixed with the owner's reaction to us , we chose to go somewhere else. And I must say I was very much taken back by his attitude. A tense owner and a pair of unleashed dogs is never a good scenario.
