Construction has finally begun (sort of). They bulldozed the frontage area....

Umeke's Bar and Grill entering the scene is a game changer! Pahoa will once again hold claim to being the small Big Island town with the best eats.

Now if we can only get those movie theaters!

In addition to Malama Mart and a gas station, the tenant list now includes: Under the Bodhi Tree, Chef TK, Fitness Forever, Goodwill, Jeans Warehouse, L&L Drive-In, Maui Tacos, McDonald’s, Strato’s New York Pizzeria, Sushi Rolls and Bowls, UPS and Umekes Fishmarket Bar and Grill.

I am sorry to see some of our Old Town Pahoa businesses will be leaving Main Street... but I understand.

I agree. Downtown Pahoa has a unique charm that can't be replicated with modern plantation style architecture. It's Puna's Paia, Makawao, or Hawi.

“Charm” still requires maintenance. Some of the charm is rotten and needs to be replaced. A fresh coat of paint wouldn’t hurt either.

Charm is grandfathered against current codes, sometimes at the expense of public safety.

I didn't see a Starbuck's or Coffe Bean and Tea Leaf?

Fine by me. Don't we have enough local coffee providers here?

A Starbucks chain store would lower the "charm" here substantially.
Why send your coffee dollars off island. Big Island grows it's own coffee.
