OTA TV Channels
#41
Is anyone else having trouble getting the FOX channels, 11.1 & 11.2?
I bought a new TV, and although it scanned in the 11’s, and they were watchable last weekend with a somewhat weak signal, now I just get a “No Signal” screen.

Also, before you buy a Samsung TV, check the tuning capabilities. My old sets allowed me to scan in the channels, then manually add any missing stations with the remote. This new Samsung won’t allow for manual station additions, it’s automatic scanning only. I probably wouldn’t have bought the set had I known in advance.

I just checked. Yes. The channels are coming in but not very well. Normally I would have rescanned, but knowing there is somebody else with a problem, normally these things eventually fix themselves. Maybe H22 will weigh in.

ETA:

My LG doesn't let me manually add channels (that I know of). And I don't remember it being a feature on our previous tv. Maybe the autotuning has evolved to the point where the manual tuning is no longer useful? FWIW, if I auto-scan and it doesn't show a channel, the channel magically shows up later when they fix the transmitter without any further attempts at tuning. I don't know how the voodoo works, it just does.

Same problem for me except I am getting a signal, just not enough to produce a picture though. Seemed to happen two or three days ago.

Thanks terracore, thanks TomK,
In the past I would auto scan for most of the channels, then manually add the 45’s. Their transmitter is in a slightly different location, so I have to turn the antenna more to the west-south-west to catch the signal. The auto scan on my new set seems to cycle through all of the channels 2 or 3 times, so next time I run it, on the final pass I’ll try and shift the antenna to catch the 45’s.

Also, for fans of Monty Python, Netflix just added 10 or 12 of their TV seasons, movies, live performances, interviews, etc. Hours & hours of content so don’t try & binge them all in one sitting, or you may be mistaken for a dead parrot.

Just got home from a trip to the mainland. Got home at 4pm this evening...all channels working (except 11's). I wonder how long this will continue?

Received a call from Khon-TV in Honolulu today. They confirmed that their Big Island transmitter was having problems...but they said the part that was needed to repair it was received today and should be back up and working correctly by late Sunday.

11.1 and 11.2 have been jumbled for over 10 days, and now the 13s are jamming up. No question that digital technology has made vast improvements in a lot of areas, but OTA tv reception isn't one of them. Or is this just a Puna thing?

I'm also going to complain about cell phone reception. The commercials (can you hear me now?) tell me that this is not just a Puna thing. I rarely use a cell phone. How refreshing it is to get someone on the other end who is also using a land line. Getting through an entire conversation without once having to say "you're breaking up". I guess for some the convenience(?) of having your phone with you at all times outweighs the inconvenience of the crappy reception. But I wish they wouldn't use it to call me.

If you have broadband internet get a free google voice phone number. When you dial on your cell phone you have the option to either use the google voice number via the wifi or use your regular cellular carrier. Plus its just a free second (disposable) phone number and doesn't use any of your "minutes" if you are not on an unlimited plan. Of course, assume that google is listening to your conversations / texts when you use their service.
