What has a ConCon accomplished when held in the past? Here are some outcomes from the 1978 Constitutional Convention::

* established term limits for state office holders,
* provided a requirement for an annual balanced budget,
* laid the groundwork for the return of federal land such as the island of Kaho#699;olawe,
* created the Office of Hawaiian Affairs

The fact that the Hawaii Government Employees Association has been heavily funding anti-Convention ads is enough to make me think it's a good idea to have one. Adding a citizens' ballot initiative measure would be an excellent idea seeing as how our "Democratic" politicians seem to be mortified at the prospect of the people actually being able to vote directly on critical issues. Abolishing the Office of Hawaiian Affairs might be a good idea, too. As for the cost, it could easily pay for itself by reining in the power of the government employees unions to dictate across the board salary increases that are not based on merit.

Looking at which organizations are for or against the ConCon is probably an excellent way we as individuals can determine who benefits (or not) by holding the convention.

Ka Lahui (M. Trask) has written a position paper opposed to Con-Con and writes;

"…The only folks pushing a State Con-Con are those supporting the creation of a State Hawaiian Nation! They want to pass the buck (literally the costs) on to the US through their “Federal Recognition” effort..."

When such a divergent roster of organizations find themselves joined together against the proposed ConCon, it makes for strange bedfellows indeed. But obstructing and resisting public input - - it's A Modest Proposal.

I wondered when the House leadership proposed a constitutional amendment to allow a Real Property tax to benefit education whether it was an attempt to besmirch the whole subject of amending the Constitution. It was so badly worded that it was easily found legally defective by the State Supreme Court and ordered unconstitutional. The fingerprints were so obvious that the authors should be embarrassed by their hamhandedness.

It thus acts as a bad reference, no doubt spoiling two potentially beneficial proposals.
