5-0 on Mauna Kea?
#21
"If built, The TMT's "EYE" in the Northern hemisphere and Mauna Kea's significance to some may bring future attention like targets or threats from country leaders like Iran or N Korea."

"Dreamcatcher88" - how are Iran or North Korea country leaders? That makes no sense. They are countries and don't think they lead anyone, least of all Hawaii and Mauna Kea.

On one hand, Hawaiians moan about "no jobs" or "kids moving to vegas" and on the other hand, they moan about "TMT bad". What gives? Is this all just grandstanding in order to get a bigger piece of the pie or are they really shooting themselves in the foot? These protectors seem confused!!

It's called eco/ethno-extortion - every major project in the state is a target for our professional protestors. They don't much care what the project is, they feel compelled to "resist" - it gives them social stature (of sorts) among their cohort ("if you can stop a major project, you must be powerfull") and if they can humble the "big shots" to the point of getting paid off to leave the the project alone, it's all gravy. Unfortunately, our feckless political class lives in terror of the activist faction and so the tactic continues to be successful no matter the cost to the community.

On one hand, Hawaiians moan about ...

There's no such thing as "The" Hawaiians. If you doubt this claim, go find a Hawaiian who is authorized to speak for all Hawaiians -- the reality is that they have different opinions despite being a single ethnic group.

As I've pointed out elsewhere, their shenanigans would be more credible if they actually had a plan for running their country. So far all I've heard is "we are owed reparations" and "we can charge rent".... but you can't charge rent for empty land where nobody is allowed to build anything, where do they think the money will come from after they've driven all the haoles off their sacred island?

That was correct before the UH Regents' meeting in November last year. After that meeting, UKIRT was no longer named as the next observatory to be decommissioned and a decision would be made, 2025 IIRC, about which observatories would need to be removed by 2033 - depending on a CDUP which is yet to happen and will likely be part of the lease renewal process. The Trib is using out-of-date and incorrect information which is a shame since they reported on the UH meeting last year so should know the facts.

TomK, thanks for the clarification. I found a BIVN article that confirms the deletion of VLBA and UKIRT from the immediate telescope decommissioning list.

Native Hawaiian Nation Constitution

We, the indigenous peoples of Hawaii, descendants of our ancestral lands from time immemorial, share a common national identity, culture, language, traditions, history, and ancestry...

The entire document, which I suspect they believe isn't any less a "plan" than the US Constitution was a "plan" at the beginning of the US government, can be read at the link above.

Keep in mind how well those rabble-rousers were perceived by their government before they declared their independence. How disparagingly King George must of spoken of their constitution. Worry not, you're in good company.

He might have.
Who would you say are the Hawaiian champions supporting their constitution, as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, etc stood behind their Constitution and made a commitment to it?

Who are the Hawaiian leaders? Who speaks for “the Hawaiians?” Would a majority agree?

I read the Hawaiian Constitution. It's great, but it doesn't explain how they intend to pay for everything. Is there another document to which I might refer?

Never mind how they're going to pay for everything the constitution promises. They've had almost four years to raise the money for a ratification vote on that noble sounding document and still haven't been able to do it. I'm not sure they've even tried. Meanwhile the "protectors" are going all out to block a telescope while their nascent nation languishes.

"the indigenous peoples of Hawaii, descendants of our ancestral lands from time immemorial"

Except they came here and wiped out the previous indigenous occupants, the Marquesans.

History 101 for this planet, unfortunately.
