Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
Tourists? What tourists?

The last batch that visited get to have an extra week on their cruise ship stuck in port waiting to be tested, plus two weeks of quarantine. Bonus vacation? (under threat of force)

All levels of government in Hawaii have not shown any capacity for making difficult choices. They will only react after the fact and even then the measures will be scattershot and half-assed. Can pretty much count on that as you make plans.

Yes, daughter that works in management at major hotel says they'll be heading toward empty by next week. Not because of government, but folks are canceling their plans to visit Hawaii instinctively.

My thought today is that by some fluke of nature, COVID-19 simply does not take hold in Hawaii.

There is a chance that the sun and humidity here in Hawaii will lessen the spread of the coronavirus, although it will not prevent it (Singapore and Malaysia with 80 degF and 90%RH have about 150 cases each, but no deaths). While we can all hope, it's best to make plans that may be needed very soon

Italy has now fully quarantined their country until April - no unnecessary travel (border checks, must have paperwork), all schools K-university are closed, no sporting events, no public events including weddings and funerals, etc. Their first identified case was Jan 31st - so they went from patient zero to countrywide shutdown in 5 weeks. This is just getting started in the U.S. over the last week or two so consider where things may be at by the end of the month.

Singapore and Malaysia have vastly different customs about social distancing compared to Italy where greeting of acquaintances is frequently accomplished by a lot of physical contact.

Singapore is one of the most efficient governments in the world and used their decades of planning to quickly trace, test, and quarantine the infected. Malaysia is worth it's own thread but if you do a little research could probably discover why they are less likely to spread or be able to detect and report compared to Italy.

Here's an example: Since 1992 chewing gum is banned in Singapore because it's something that people might spit out. The penalty for chewing gum includes imprisonment:

Spitting, or expelling mucous in public is also illegal. And let's not forget that American teenager who caused an international whining when he broke their laws and was sentenced to caning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Fay

That would be nice. People in Hawaii are overall a little more healthy than other places. Overall more happy. A good attitude can go a long way towards general health. Just have to wait and see. All we need is a pandemic and an economic collapse to really create an unpleasant situation.

I would settle on good ol' hard work and following the precepts of science. If the state, Ige, just said why wait and locked the state down we could, maybe, be virus free in short order.

In other words be cautious. And, with the evidence mounting, that's not being rash. That is being prudent. At least in my opinion.

The alternative is what? Does anyone believe we can have an outbreak without going to those drastic measures anyways? So why wait? Especially when taking preemptive action stands a chance of minimizing the damage.

1. Ige would have to be able to make a decision, which capability he has yet to demonstrate.

2. Ige doesn't have the authority to shut down interstate transport because Federal authority pre-empts.

3. Ige won't dare preclude the big bailouts soon to be available for virus-stricken disaster areas.

CDC wants airlines to collect COVID-19 data. Apparently it’s not any more difficult than distributing & completing USDA forms before arrival into Hawaiian airports:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials have threatened to recommend the Trump administration ground planes in the United States if airlines fail to start collecting new forms of data on passengers to assess their coronavirus risk, CNN reports.

Penalties include fines as high as $500,000 as well as jail time of up to a year.
