Another account coming out of Italy (begging your indulgence Rob). Hospitals running at 200% capacity, ~35% of patients are under 65, patients 65+ or younger with underlying health issues are not being assessed or treated at all, healthcare workers are coming down sick, deaths from other causes spiking due to lack of care.
Small grain of salt (it is the internet) but this aligns with what other trusted sources have said is happening and is beyond concerning.

MarkP we live in the facebook era and if someone isn't a narcissist they will act like one taking selfies and basically following the new societal norm of being self-absorbed and constantly chronologizing it by way of taking a photo or video and posting online. I think it's more important to think in terms of defensive strategies than to expect respectful behaviors unfortunately. Lots of wingnuts in Puna too.
My latest is I have a colloidal silver spray from the health food store and literally use it like a face spritzer before or after doing each errand or contact with strangers. It goes into my nose, open mouth and around my open eyes. Then 1000mg of D3 and C every morning. Hope to add something else today to the artillery, lol.
Too bad your Dad still has his license, my Mom got her's taken away at 81. She's got all the neighbors chauffeuring her around, working it in her Chanel suit, hat and handbag. Watch out...old parents can be like toddlers.

007, have you explored fresh chopped up garlic to add to your daily routine? Tough at first but you get used to it. First thing in the morning on empty stomach, some do it hour before bed if you eat dinner early.
Some mix it with honey also. Just let the garlic sit for about 10 minutes after chopping. The health benefits of fresh garlic is amazing. The research and info online about it is incredible.

The news, MSNBC, doctor, this morning says we, the USA, are 10 days behind Italy in the development of this crisis, and the burden it is going to place on our healthcare system.
NY is calling up the national guard.
Trump plays golf, what is Ige up to?
Oh, and yeah, the Merrie Monarch Festival, a magnet for international travel to Hilo, and people coming from far and wide, is scheduled to go on as planned. One would think their organizers would have more compassion for the welfare of the kupuna on the island than that... but no?
The CONVID 19 virus does not appear to be as much a threat to younger healthy people. But the numbers for the elderly, and especially those that are otherwise compromised, is staggering. As one of that demographic I would hope that the rest honor and protect us. But seeing folks with a cavalier, why worry it's just another flu, attitude is scary. Unfortunately I think of Ige and Kim, both who should know better, are both too worried about the optics to actually take a stand and as such are equally as dangerous to our welfare.

It’s too bad an already existing group, with a disdain for people from the mainland or of activities with an international impact on local affairs, who claim imaginary dangers such as a polluted water table, can’t recognize an event that will most likely bring a deadly virus to the island. If only such a group might protect us from real peril.

^THIS. The outbreak is building momentum day by day. The next two weeks will be increasingly dire as we reach Italy's number of infections (10,000+ today up from 500 just 2 weeks ago).

Then again, we won't see those numbers here as we're stuck in the "don't test, don't tell" mentality.

ironyak,
Have you read how many test kits are now available in Hawaii? An administration (fed) official said the other day 1.3 million went out across the country, so if we have our share proportionally by population, that’s 250 kits for all of Hawaii. About 15 or 20 for Big Island?
That is if 1.3 million were really distributed.

It's become a tangled mess to track in all honesty. Promises missed, mistaken timing, confusion over test kits and how many people those can test (as multiple samples/tests are needed per person), etc... Private labs like Quest are starting to come online, but results might take longer... A recent detailed summary of the tangled web can be found here:
https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/the-fa...s-testing/
Not sure where that leaves Hawaii - today's SA article says can DOH can test 250-500 people per week, although there are several tests pending. Hopefully the local journalists can clarify at the next press conference.
However, as New York is ramping up testing capabilities (7 labs now, more private labs pending) they are finding many news cases ("numbers going up unabated") and expect them to keep rising. The cluster at New Rochelle is now a containment zone with 3 schools closed for at least 2 weeks and public gatherings banned. The national guard is being used to deliver food & help with cleaning of public spaces (boots on the ground also helps maintain order). Not a quarantine zone though.

The 936 foot long Eurodam cruise ship was diverted from Lahaina to Kahului:
Harbors District Manager for Maui, Duane Kim ... said the ship put in a request this weekend to come to Kahului instead of Lahaina because of weather on the West side where the ship typically stops and tenders passengers.
Authorities did not specify what type of weather conditions hampered the plan stop. There are currently no advisories in place from the National Weather Service.

There are no COVID-19 positive passengers onboard, assuming anybody could be tested. For those of you who are cautious or of a conspiratorial nature, the ship is scheduled to arrive in Hilo tomorrow, Wednesday: 11 Mar 08:00 - 18:00
