aloha all,
well, what can i say? the turpin's are great folks with alot of aloha. i can't comment on the youtube/danger issues regarding the illeged incompetence by "outsideobserver." however, i can state that i have experienced the lava adventure first-hand with shane's father bud, and all i can say is that it is a once in a lifetime experience. life is dangerous. people are killed almost weekly it seems, simply walking around Hilo. i wouldn't step foot in a helicopter to fly around hawai'i, but i'd jump on the lava tour again in a heartbeat. to each his own.....
much continued success with the tours shane, but do take into consideration the input here, and hopefully you'll put future participant's minds even more at ease....

Great folks with lots of aloha? Does "aloha" embody a total lack of business ethics, or do you overlook that because someone's your "brah?" Not only did they steal the phrase "ocean adventure" from Roy Carvalho's business, which is very unethical, but the entire way the business is conducted is extremely unethical. Back to back boat trips on the website, one leaving at 4:30 am and another out at 6:30 am, then another right after and another. What about safety checks to the equipment? What kind of maritime monitoring equipment is on that boat? I didn't see much in the photos. Is it ethical according to "Aloha" to be picking up pieces of lava, not only from the cultural point of view, but from the point of view of putting something that is in excess of 1800 degrees F on top of a fiberglass hull? I didn't see any asbestos tiles under that lump. There are a lot of things which qualify as a good time, but they certainly don't qualify as ethical, which is what a maritime business must be first and foremost, as you are literally taking people's lives in your hands.
Speaking of which, while I'm on a tear, what kind of a looney tune goes out in the Ocean in a 17 foot anything? On the windward side no less? Jeez, there are days when you can't go out on Barnegat Bay in New Jersey in that craft, but the Puna Coast right off a ramp which has to have a breakwater because of persistent swell? I'm sure all the surfers at Pohoiki will laugh when I say we surf here in the summer. Yeah, well, we wouldn't take that boat out where we surf, so why should it go out where YOU surf if the swell is so much bigger? Not to mention that there is no history of Tsunami in the Atlantic. I read Jose Martinez's page and what November 15th did to his skiff. LavaKat is only two feet longer, even if it does have more draw. Mark my words, that boat is going to roll when the first time a mean squall rolls in when the Turpins have their pants down.

aloha all,
as often stated in other threads, things are different on the mainland than they are in Hawai'i. your concern for the safety of others is commendable, however you seem a bit too knowledgeable and concerned to not have an alterior motive, or a "connection," to captain roy, in my mind.
"outsideobserver," you'll be visiting in May, and have never been to Hawai'i? thats painfully obvious. good luck with YOUR brand of "aloha." i'm sure da boys will welcome you with open arms....
i recommend visiting "pohoiki boat ramp or kehena after dark...."

Hey Smartass,
The properties of water and the ocean are the same all over the world, which is where I have been, for 48 years.
Oh, by the way, I'm not coming to Hawaii to meet up with whites who ran away from the mainland. Not interested in losers. Know all about the majority population there, you see
I've also been reading about the Big Island for six months now. As for visiting Kehena, or Isaac Hale after dark, don't think I'm afraid. First off, I'm a woman, secondly, I've lived in South Africa, in Johannesburg, one of the most dangerous places on earth, where I jumped into a crowd of three hundred squatters when a guy was hit by a car, and I was the only white person, and nobody touched me. I'm not afraid of you or anyone. I'll be there with my brother, but if I had to, I'd bring my other brothers, and my nephews, all surfers, one a retired Navy Seal, though they'd probably just watch and laugh as I kick your candy behind. I'm from Jersey, we don't play, don't play with me. I already know about all the blue tarp campers permanently residing at Isaac Hale, and the local "anti-culture" in Puna. What, do you all think you're so original? More like Appalachians who figured out a way to live the same without having to forage for wood all winter. Hawaii is full of whites who have screwed the chain of islands up for over a hundred years now, everyone of you sprinkling "aloha" this and that along the way. As far as I'm concerned, someone living on the dole and someone exploiting the real estate and living in the mansion are on par with each other- Whitey just taking over and milking the system any way he can. I've seen it all over the world. Don't give me any of your organic farming crap either, I know what the primary crop of Puna is, and it's not tomatoes. The worst part is, you all congratulate yourselves on how great you are, and how much you're doing for the community, that you can't see the truth from crap. Personally, I hope the Sovereignity movement gains ground and kicks all your sorry white asses back to the 48.
Oh, by the way, I never met Roy Carvalho, I'm paying him for my trip, but I know an ignorant moron by what they write and when I'm talking to one, like right now. Later!

If you guys and gals insist on mudslinging and verbally attaching each other you are on a short road to nowhere on Puanweb.
I will insist on civil discourse and a reasonable level of respect from all toward all.

Does this mean I have to make nice with Brad?
I thought for sure this would end in a bitch-slap fight between me and Brad at the boat ramp with someone here taking bets beforehand- don't you people watch "The Sopranos"?
Damn. Now I have to pay for that Lava Trip out of my own pocket. Damn!

And folks, remember too, the hike out across the flow from Kalapana is a pretty easy stroll. We got up at four am a few weeks ago and hiked out using our headlamps. Got to watch the red lava flowing in what looked like sheets down the side of the mountain to the north in the dark. We hit the point where it enters the ocean right at daylight. What a show! Had the whole place to ourselves and were half way out hours later before the first tour helo showed up.

Got anymore "aloha" advice or info? You appear to be an expert in aloha, and I'm thirsty for knowledge.

Hey Rob,
It's beginning to look like silly absurdities may be in order again.
