Hey Lackey:
It sounds like Kathy went through a **** storm with this neanderthal. If it were me i probably would have gone physical with the guy and tossed him after the re-bar he tossed over the cliff.
I'd say you are a tad judgmental in your condemnation. Some people find outlet in writing about their experiences. Kathy has performed a service here as far as I'm concerned by telling her story in detail. I for one will never call this guy and if I have the opportunity I would recommend to anybody to stay clear of him. Kathy's story was confirmed by others here on this forum who had similar experiences.
Andrew

Thanks Andrew and Menehune and Hope! ...
it's interesting to see how I can say several times I'm not telling the story to say woe is me.
I tell the story in detail because I don't want anyone else to be suckered in,
and
there are at least two sides to every story, and when I first posted it I had no other idea it had happened to anyone but me.
I know what I did wrong in so far as not getting enough references and enough in writing.
But, being a person who tried to deal honestly with the guy, what I didn't understand is why he's yelling at me that I'm trying to rip him off and calling him a thief ... what did I do to him? Why is he going off on me as being the reason locals don't like haoles? etc.
thus I lay out the story.
That nasty post doesn't really deserve a reply, but it's not true that I tried to save some dollars. I didn't call Troy because I heard he was CHEAP. I just thought from the description on the tree clearing topic that Troy was the right person for that job.
$1000 was a good price for the labor on that job. This was ferns, guava, and immature African tulip, not big trees. I didn't want a Sunset Garden path, just rough foot access. (Not slippery and unsafe)
The unfortunate part is that the job I wanted wasn't interesting enough I guess, and he got it into his head that it would be no big deal to take the path down the "pali" instead of in from the road. He got this more elaborate idea and pitched it as the right solution.
Then once he got into the execution, he got all impatient and wanted to be done fast so he didn't do the switchbacks, made it really steep, and then got pissed that I didn't accept it.
The point of posting it was that he DOES have a charming convincing personality when he chooses to, and could suck other people here in to a similar situation and then get laid into like I did. I don't wish it on anybody else.
I mean, it's not pleasant to have a raging "neanderthal" on your property, yelling for money, with his dog, and his truck, his pickaxes and machetes and saws ... refusing to leave without being placated with money. cubanishi called the cops and I was this close to calling them myself. I don't even want to think of how I would have felt if I'd been there alone with him ... scared.
And dude, I'm not a tree cutter. Not an option to do it myself. My thing is to put in the plants ... and do the hand weeding and pruning ... I leave the power tools and machetes to the boys, who seem to have more fun with them.

Kathy,
I realize that hindsight is 20/20, but I would advise others that if this kind of thing happens, it is best to call the police ASAP. Don't pay off what you don't owe. Get a report filed with PD.
Time should heal the assault.

Aloha KathyH,
This happened about 3 years ago, almost right after we arrived on the Big Island. 'Welcome to the Big Island", that's how we felt. Other 'good samaritans' neighbors helped ease the trauma, but later proved they were just as bad, only in a more subtle way. I don't know, maybe it was our naive attitude or what but we were taken twice right after we arrived. Luckily we survived it and have found many kind and generous people since then.
If I can in ANY WAY help you get over this, please let me know. I will help in any way I can, being shoveling dirt or whatever. Please let me know. It will help you AS MUCH AS IT'LL HELP ME.
Aloha,
Maritza

This guy isn’t altered by drugs can’t you see his MO? Get in cheep, he goes postal then threatens for more money and he will go away. It’s a scam. As you can see eight fingers, hooligal, Kapohocat and some others on Puna Web have a background in contracts and insurance. Email me and I will try to give you any information I can.
DanielP you quoted gerneral liabiliy insurance to run 2-4% of the project. I find that hard to accept because a prudent contractor will have a yearly policy and not have to take it out for each project.
But when in question I hire Kapohocat as a consultant. Her prices are reasonable; she is a professional at this and has many connections in the County DPW. It’s worth a few bucks for her services.
I feel mo’ better when she is leading my charge.
