So in other words the thrust of this thread is, let the thugs win. To each his own, but I for one have no intention of spending thousands to protect my family and belongings from scum. Ya'll take that anyway you choose to.

hmm,
I thought the right to bear arms was placed in the Constitution to guarantee the people the right of a militia if the government became oppressive.
The constitutional question was not about the right to bear arms. It was about the full and actual reading in its entirety. The right to bear arms... shall not be infringed." That was ruled on by the Supreme Court. It is a right, so government can't infringe on that right. But, they can pass whatever regulations they want so long as they are not essentially banning gun ownership. Licensing, training, registration, carry restrictions, use, etc., are all allowed under the Supreme Court ruling so long as they are not by those regulations, absolutely denying gun ownership. Hawaii's regulations will pass constitutional scrutiny.

No offense Dick, but when presented with workable alternatives to killing someone over "stuff", how do you figure anyone is capitulating to criminals.
I'm certainly not against guns. I've got to repeat however, that I don't fear armed criminals as much as an out of shape, out of practice, enraged, geezer with a gun.
Had one since you were seven? I guess Dick Cheney did also.
You mean the same Dick Cheney that's NOW under Federal Investigation
...Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on state charges involving federal prisons in a South Texas county that has been a source of bizarre legal and political battles under the outgoing prosecutor...

I think there are a lot of good ideas here and guns are not in my list of "good ideas", mostly because of so many accidents and domestic disputes that end up deadly. Neighborhood watches are certainly a great idea and I really do think that the volunteer security checks are also a great idea! That is a pro-active way to take care of business. All it will take is for the word to get out and the thugs will go elsewhere where pickings are easier.
Placing a substation closer to population is a great idea. Those with home alarm systems are not protecting themselves when it takes 30 minutes for the cops to respond. It may raise taxes slightly, but it certainly would be worth it.
The town where we lived in IL cops actually drove by every house every night (5,250 homes) and if you were going on vacation you could have "vacation watch" and that meant they would drive by at least 5 X a day/night. You could tell them ahead if you had a pet sitter or something so that they would recognize the autos as intruders or not. There was virtually no crime in this town, so the cops had nothing else to do besides give speeding tickets. Only 5 full time cops and 5 part time cops. If there was ever a petty crime there was immediately a newsletter that went out to all home owners explaining what happened. Usually it was someone who left their briefcase, cell phone and other things in an unlocked car in their driveway and kids took the oportunity to grab them. This happened three times in the five years I lived there and with the sharp eye of parents the kids were caught each time.

I typed this before going to bed last night, and now I see that the entry before me has some great ideas...here it is anyway....
I read this entire topic, and most entries were focused on discussions of gun laws or just complaining. Are there any NEW ideas?
Seems to me that Hawaiians, unlike Texans, would rather ignore the problem than solve it. Protecting your property, and enforcing laws should be a priority. Ignoring drug laws and supporting the “kick-back” lifestyle doesn’t help. This problem (Drugs and thievery ) has been the main reason I have not yet committed to moving to the B.I. Now some of you may think that this is a good thing (one less mainlander), but I assure you it is not. Unless you encourage up-standing citizens to move to paradise, you end up with more and more “bottom feeders“…..
Now before some of you jump all over me for the “bottom feeders” remark, let me say that I too was once on the bottom of the economic curve and don‘t mind rubbing elbows with the needy….but I NEVER stole anything, used drugs, or received government help…..A “bottom feeder” is not just someone with out means…”bottom feeders” steal, lie, and cheat, to support a lifestyle of laziness and drug /alcohol use. Unless the community holds on to and promotes moral and descent behavior, there will constantly be issues…… I look forward to the day when Puna sheds the “wild west” label it has, and becomes the “Paradise” that it truly is.
I worked my ass off for what I have and can’t afford anyone steeling it. I would like to keep my “stuff” so that I may one day pass it on to my children. I am amazed how quickly the subject changed when the mention of using a gun to protect your “stuff” came up. Someone comes on to my property without permission I am on guard…. Steal from me and I will try to get my “stuff” back….Attack me, and I will defend myself……Hawaiian law allows deadly force if you fear for your life….and hell…. I fear for my life when someone has the nerve to enter my home without permission. (they can only be up to no good). I thief knows in advance that the citizen he is robbing may have a gun an actually use it to defend himself.....
I think sting operations run through out HPP would be the best way to keep the thieves away….

What I forgot to say was ........
If you have a rat in your pantry you can either ignore it or set a trap to either kill it, or catch it. If you catch it you must either train it to raise it's own food, keep it in a cage and feed it, or release far away to be someone else’s problem. I say set a trap and catch them…………

I've told this story before, but when a neighbor got ripped off, I asked the police about it and they said, yeah, they knew who did it or at least had a very good idea. (but couldn't prove it?) I asked them, are you going to pursue them, investigate them? And the officer said "no" with a surprised voice like why would we do that? (But we'll take another report when it happens again, and maybe someday they'll be caught in the act?)
The officer's advice - watch your stuff.
With a statement like this I can't understand why there are people out there that can't phatom the reason to be armed. Now if I had this "low life" pinned to the ground with my 44 mag stuck in the back of his head until the police showed, could you understand that? Being the old Geezer that I am I don't think the punk would be very frightened if all I had was my cell phone for protection.
God bless Samual Colt.

Tom makes a great leap forward! There is a big difference between judge, jury and executioner and making a citizen's arrest.
Congratulations.
Meanwhile Tom you should be aware that being armed generally poses more risk to you than to anyone else. It is your choice. Wanna get into a tug or war for a gun with a desperate twenty year old? Your choice.
I have been robbed at gun point a couple times and robbed at knife point a couple times (never in Hawaii). One thing that impressed me was having to deal with a dummy. Dummies aren't logical. Don't count on your gun convincing a dummy that they should stand still while the police arrive. I got out of all my scrapes intact with minimal losses and no injury. Bad experiences but experience none-the-less. I am here to tell the tales.
I sincerely hope you never have to translate bluster into a nightmare.

There are around 200 million privately owned firearms in the USA, there are almost as many cars in the USA.
if there was more risk to having a firearm then the numbers would show it.
Being from the evil State of Texas, almost everyone I know owns 1 or more guns. To date, no one I know has had any kind of accident.
I also know a few that have used firearms to protect their family and "stuff".
You are much more likely to get hurt by a car then a gun... but there are more guns than cars.
I am much more likely to listen to the moral argument than talk about accidents.
