HPP under attack!!!!
The question that I'm trying to figure out...

Why would anyone want to move to an area where they thought they might need to protect themselves with guns?

Is land so cheap here, that it's worth the fact that you need to live in paranoia?

This is where I come up with "You get what you pay for" statement.

I just do not understand why people would move into an area where they felt unsafe?

I know that when I move to an area... Safety is one of the first things that I look into.

If I felt the need to use a gun to protect my property or life... I simply wouldn't move there.

Is it really worth the risk?

And just where would that be? Often in the past, and in rare instances today, people lived in extended family groups or compounds where there was always several people present. That makes for much greater security and much more risk to the baddie of being caught. That living arrangement is not realistic for most of us today.

I've had guns my whole life. Never shot anyone... I've been ripped off by Cockaroaches twice. It was when I was not home. Had a gun safe. Stereo and TV stolen. Actually the TV was sitting just outside the front door. Something scared the perps away before they could complete the job. I know of a neighbor who shot someone on his property for stealing some select plants. The guy died. Neighbor got 10 years and served most of it. Not worth it.

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Name 1 place in the great US of A that you can live without worry of crime...

About the only place at the moment that I know of is somewhere in Pasadena TX. off Timberline Drive. Its the same neighborhood where Joe Horn Shot those 2 Illegal Aliens, who were breaking into his neighbors house. For the record I dont completely agree with Mr Horns actions but you cant deny the fact that this sent a huge message to other crooks looking for an easy victim to ripoff. Facts are that before the shooting this neighborhood was having about 15+ break-ins a month. Last I checked they have had 0 since Joe Horn shot and killed those 2 fools.

So in your world, if I own a pistol I'm a Paranoid?

wow those statistics really make you think
11,624 people murdered with guns and only 143 ok with justifiable homicides.... so
if those 11,624 people had guns to protect themselves the numbers should be alot less murders and more JH's makes a good argument to me! i certainly would and will do anything in my power to protect my home and family and this isnt a cultural statement or a lack of aloha.

Some of you certainly show signs of paranoia. Owning a gun does not make you paranoid. It makes you a gun owner. I agree that we all have a right to own a gun. Constitution says that. It also calls for due process. My points here are not about defending your life. We are each entitled to defend our lives and will and should.

Thinking your gun(s) will solve the property crime problem is fantasy.

Sending a message to dummies is a fantasy. What I heard from the gun advocates here so far is mostly fantasy. Too many movies I guess. My point is that your fantasies about guns seem to engender thinking that you have the right to turn to lethal remedies for nonviolent crime. Thieves are indeed committing a crime. "Two warning shots to the head" is a greater crime. If you take that step you should hope I am not on your jury.

It does bother me when fantasy reigns on a serious topic. You fantasize that the fact you own guns will terrorize the thieves. They don't know your ass from Adam. They don't intend to know you. They intend to come in when you are not home and they will steal your guns if they are there. Home invasions are extremely rare unless you are a drug dealer. Drug dealers might have guns too. The common run of the mill thieves we have, the vast majority, here commit crimes of opportunity. They wait until you are not home. They come in with high hopes of not confronting the homeowner (you). You fantasize that you will have 100% judgment in all circumstances to make a clear, informed and rational decision. You fantasize that you will be a good shot and you fantasize that you will be praised for your obvious abilities.

Your neighbors are your best protection. When you are home there is really no evidence you need protection. When you are not home your guns won't help you anyway. Your neighbors can help you. Police busting and putting the few thieves away can help you.

I have been robbed at gun point. On one of those occasions I had access to my room mates .45 automatic. I am very glad I didn't go for the gun. The thieves weren't interested in making a mess. They just wanted stuff. I came home unexpectedly. If guns were added to that mix it would have gotten too messy too fast.

If you truly care about crime in your neighborhood you should take the time (it will not take 100% of your time) and get your neighborhood watch up and running. Your Neighborhood watch group should be constantly drumming the Mayor and Council to step up anti crime efforts. The thought that any one of you will, with your few or many guns, turn back the tide of property crime is a Texas fantasy.

Assume the best and ask questions.

My belief is Most crime comes for the neighborhood you live in. Most crooks know about the neighborhood they rob from including who will shoot them and who wont.
Having a gun will not keep you from being robbed. But it might keep you from being killed. The crocks knowing your house is armed may save your life and theirs.

I am sure the guys that broke into our place are our neighbors so asking them to watch our house might not be very smart on my part. Watching them and getting them tossed in jail might be smart on my part.

Google "Big Island home invasions" seems they happen here also. Seeing as my first personal robbery could have turned in to a home invasion real quick I lean to the paranoid side.

Also, if your house is robed successfully you can expect to get hit again in the 6 weeks. So again I lean to the paranoid side.

I googled "Big Island home invasions" as suggested and found reference to one, that happened a year ago.
The other hits all refer to the same one, or home invasions in Oahu, or on the mainland.

They do happen, but they're rare. Especially if you're not linked with drugs.

Like I said... You get what you pay for.

There are gated communities on Oahu and there are some going up on the Kona side of the Big Island.... You get what you pay for. Most of these houses start at $1 Million Plus.

The security guards at the gates won't even allow visitors through the gates if they haven't been called in to the security gate. And on top of that, if the visitor is driving, they have to show proof of insurance in case they were to get in an accident in this gated community.

This whole Community here Off Kalanianaole (Puuikena Drive and Up) is just one of these areas.
