HPP under attack!!!!
The single greatest protection against victimization is not being a "victim." Being prepared for confrontation or at least projecting the appearance of being prepared for confrontation will protect one against 99% percent of all crimes. Criminals look and seek out those people with a victim complex, and obviously there are plenty of easy pickings out there among those.

Unfortunately, those who choose victimization over responsibly protecting their own property commit the same sorts of crimes of negligence that others might--in a very direct and participatory way subsidizing the culture that allows petty crimes to continue more or less uncontested. It is obvious at this point locally that there is insufficient infrastructure to depend on what tools law enforcement possesses to prevent crimes. In light of this lack, the responsibility of keeping public order and safety falls personally upon the citizens of our community. Some will choose to evade this responsibility.

Some will not.

When I practiced in Oklahoma, I went to Rotary with the DA, Assistant DA, the Police Chief, and several officers. There was an "incident" where two young men bent on stealing money undertook a home invasion/burglary while the owner of the house and his wife were at home one evening. These wonderful people had been my patients for many years and were good people. Perhaps he reasoned with them in a civil manner? Perhaps he and his wife served them tea and crumpets? What we do know is that these two "young misguided boys that must deserve a second chance" caused the husband to watch as they hacked his wife to death with a machete, starting with the extremities, working their way up. They followed up by doing the same to the husband. I talked to the police cheif personally, so I know this is true. So all you do-gooder men out there, how would you feel if this happened to your wife? Maybe you should ask your wife how she feels about being raped and murdered by some little punk drug addicts looking for their next fix.
I cornered each of the officials I mentioned above and asked what would be the appropriate action to follow if someone broke into MY house, and the unanimous reply was: make sure they are inside the house, then make sure they are dead. Hey, I would be happy to pray with them if that would make someone happy, before I sent them to wherever they were headed anyway.
I agree that a fence and dogs and locked doors are a beginning, but we all know if someone really wants inside your house a chainsaw or sledge hammer will do the job and there's nothing you can do about it. At my house, if you climb the fence, kill the dogs, and kick down the door, I'm not going to ask if you are there to have a bible study (although some groups ARE becoming more determined to save me recently), I'm going to use my 12 guage and send six your way, then rely on the 44 special and assorted 38's hidden here and there to back up my intentions to protect my WIFE and myself as the LAW gives me the LEGAL right to do. (By the way I LOVE the Taurus 4410, thanks for the link). Before you go off Rob, on me spending time incarcerated for hurting some wayward child, I would gladly spend the rest of my life in jail for killing one of these MF SOB's rather than have my wife raped and murdered because I'm a *****. OKAY?
For all of you that think peace and prosperity is on the way, I hope it is, but I think society will fall to its lowest level before long, and I am ready. I am absolutely PRO-Choice. You make the choice to try to kill me and mine, and I will make the choice to stop you. Better yet,go on down the road to Rob's house, he's giving stuff away.
Oh yes, until someone comes up with a BODY (or bodies),I dont think anyone will even know anything happened. (They probably didnt file a flight plan). My neighbors arent that close, and I'm always making big noises anyway. (Lots of empty lava tubes around if you know what I mean).Besides, who says I have to use a GUN to send someone to their reward!!
Anyway this whole discussion is SO retarded. Last I knew, it is a CRIME, maybe ILLEGAL to break into someone's house and rob/maim/kill them. So why the big sweat about protecting these CRIMINALS who want to rape and pillage? Give them what they deserve, let God decide where they will spend eternity.
This would be Ron, by the way. I dont say much but dont F**K with me.

More fantasy....

There is no history or report of HPP suffering a rash of armed robbery, rape, torture or murder.

You are fantasizing imaginary paranoid scenarios to justify your desire to have a gun and or shoot someone.

Relax, Rent a Rambo movie....

Assume the best and ask questions.

Not fantasy at all.

During the time my Dad owned our local small town funeral home and I was involved in the business through my High School years, I'm certain I helped bury at least a dozen guys shot in a break-in, while beating up a girlfriend/wife, or messing with a child. It's not uncommon at all. As well, I've buried a few unfortunate families hacked by some screw ball. Certainly a number of suicides. Not a single hunting accident that resulted in a fatality comes to mind. My Dad, however, has tales that would make your skin crawl, of sorts of freaks of the most abhorrent behavior, stories I'll just spare you from. There are really really messed up people out there. Fortunately, not too many, but they do exist.

From working with felons first hand, I'm completely aware and informed of what the most effective deterrent to crime is--straight from the horse's mouth. They ARE scared of a well armed homeowner, and that's the only thing they are scared of.

Why did I get out of law enforcement? The local cops were running a porn ring with girls they caught breaking curfew. Perhaps this taints as well my level of confidence in how much protection there is out there.

And once again... I ask... when was the last time an intruder was shot on the Big Island?

Anyone remember the WaaWaa/Papaya Farm Road shooting?

The one where a Home/Farm Owner shot and killed a guy who was caught stealing in the middle of the night. I remember reading the perp was caught a few other times on this same property and had a gun.

This was in the mid to late 1990's. The property owner was cleared of all charges I think.

Which brings to mind the Seaview Neighborhood Watch shooting that happened a few years ago when the Neighborhood Watch patrol guy saw young people doing donuts and parting in the park at the front of the neighborhood. The guy discharged a .45 cal into the passenger seat of one of the cars, luckly no one was killed. I'm thinking he was just released from prison this last year.

I seriously hate violence but this world is controlled by it.

When is the last time some ***hole beating the hell out of his wife or diddling a kid should have?

I agree with you Damon, completely, on other matters. I think Hawaii is probably the safest place I've ever lived, and the problem here in this topic is getting greatly overblown.

It is your legal right to have a gun, you don't need a fantasy to have one. This would be per the second amendment to the constitution of the United States, of which Hawaii is a part. If you don't like guns fine, but until the constitution is amended and maybe not then, you won't get mine.
