This is my rifle, this is my gun.....

Years ago when I lived in HA, I lived on the well traveled part of 9 road between F and Ainaloa Blvd. One day our friend parked his car in our driveway and road to work with me. I loved it that within 45 mins of leaving home, I had FIVE calls to let me know a strange car was in the driveway, and one call to say the person checked out the strange car and here was the lic #!

That's a neighborhood watch!

I agree with the essence of this thread. But I would like Glen to explain his statement about Hawaii having a culture of larceny based on Captain Crook, oops I mean Cook's visits to the island. Was Cook himself not here as any other "explorer" on a real mission of conquest? On his last and final visit to these islands the Hawaiians began to get hip to that possibility and began to see Cook as the threat he truly was.
I know you meant no harm with your statement Glen, but a lot of Hawaiians may take such comments as an insult.

Not saying Captain Cook was good. He was probably a fine man, but he began the degradation of the islands. So, I think it would have been morally correct to kill him on sight. If transported back in time, I probably would have gladly wielded the club. I also agree with the sentiments of the whalers that used to fire cannonballs at the churches in Lahaina (the churches made the women put long frocks on whereas before they walked around with their gifts on display). To be fair to Captain Cook he was quite accomplished and a great adventurer. Someone would have happened a long if not him. It was inevitable. Still, he took the theft of his boat a little stronger than an islander might have. Hawaii was more of a collective back then. You can't steal anything in a collective.

My gosh Glen. You sure have a subjective interpretation of history. Cook began the degradation of the islands only if you consider any Western contact a degradation. You would have gladly bashed his head in for a misunderstanding that should have been negotiated by both sides? I'm sure you wouldn't have used a gun to shoot him if it were available to you. The whalers wern't upset about the changes in attire. They were upset about being cut off from their nearly free sex that was killing the natives with VD. I guess free sex trumps any other value. The missionaries may have been a little off on their beliefs on concealing the body, but in those pre-penicillin pre-birth control days, there was a lot to be said for abstinence and fidelity, regardless of your moral views. As for the boat, I don't think borrowing from your clan is theft. Taking from another clan without permission was probably considered theft, but was also probably ok with your clan, just not the losing clan. I wonder what would have happened to you if you were caught taking a chiefs boat from another clan without permission. Cook was a chief.

1. Would have used a gun on Captain Cook if I had had one. I would have done this to protect the islands for another decade or two.
2. Yes, any western contact degraded the islands.
3. Some eastern contact (removal of Sandalwood forests to China) did the same.
4. Yes, the whalers wanted sex and the islanders didn't mind giving it. You do have a point about the diseases they brought, but that isn't why the missionaries wanted the women dressed from head-to-toe. It is because the missionaries were adherents of a Middle Eastern religion that required such head-to-toe modesty. What really upset the whalers was missing this: Pulling into a hot tropical port after a long voyage and having scores of naked women --and who knows maybe a few guys-- swim to them.

Well, I am sorry for initiating this diversion from the original thread. Perhaps we should get back to the topic at hand.
I think one of the biggest preventative measures we can take against thieves is to work together as a community; you know, have watch each others' backs. Neighborhood wathch groups are a good start, but we should go beyond that. Everyone should take the initiative to keep an eye out fot their neighbors and neighborhood.
It is the inaction of people that often allows for the expansion of a bad situation. It may be your neighbor today, maybe your house tomorrow!

Leilani used to be a scary place to have to go to. Truly. What cleaned up the place was a strong community watch, police assistance, and neighbors being aware of neighbors. It wasnt all that long ago - 1997 maybe - that people did have guns and dogs and ice/meth whatever. Now look at it. The one thing the Community policing officer told us was when leilani was cleaned up the crack heads scattered to other subdivisions.

Maybe if we worked on our communities issues with drugs and (NO NOT THE 420 kine so dont get your knickers twisted) had some decent recovery programs and education that might also help. Clear out the problems in HPP and some other subdivision will be crying "under attack" next without some real preventive infrastructure.

How about this for a home protection devise.

You can buy on the market today a recording of a monster dog barking, growling, snarling and chomping at the bit to bust his way thru the door to get at you. It is set off by sensors when someone approaches your home it automatically triggers the device. It will continue until the motion devices stop sending a signal and that is only when all movement on your property stops.

Sounds pretty cool uh? Problem is that it will go off if a cat strays onto your property when it is set. But if your not home who cares except the neighbors every time it goes off. Heck that may be a reason to talk to them about watching each other’s place when either isn’t home.

Maybe they could make a recording of a 12 gauge pump shot gun being cocked instead of a barking dog. I think that would send a crook running a hell of a lot faster than a barking dog. Oh dear Glen, sorry this is a no gun thread.
