have sent an email off to our best friend who is a manager (not in the visual dept.) at the foodland ala moana store to see if he can provide the information. he has done visual merchandising for such stores as tommy bahama, guess, jcp, sears and others.

Mehana - according to Pukui/Elbert 'e' is pronounced as in bet so try Meh-hana with the 'eh' like the Canadians use...."eh?"

Walmart does not ask for backup ID, and neither does Safeway, KTA, or Foodland, and Long's doesn't even ask for a signature if the purchase is under $25.00 yet for $12.57, I'm a suspect by someone who overharges me. It's not as if I were buying an expensive electronic item or a pile of steaks or a case of booze. In such instances, I would not only expect but demand some sense of professionalism, but for an enterprise to suspect someone of credit card fraud and risk arrest and imprisonment in order to buy a few apples, some frozen vegetables, and a piece of pastry is not only mindless and clinically paranoid, but it may also indicate that management of this sort is so untrusting due to misbehavior of their own and thinks everyone is a crook. I'm not suggesting this is the case, but someone, please, give a logical explanation as to why, under circumstances as outlined above, such a practice is policy.

I have been asked for backup ID at both KTA and Safeway for both small and large purchases. One time I got ID'd at cost u less when I spent less than $5. If you don't like being ID'd, then spend cash; as long as it is a less than $5000 item you are unlikely to be asked for ID.

If you say so, Carol, but I don't understand because there's a good chance that I look more like a criminal than you.

The other thing I like about Malama Market is that when I am in there, I have that thrilling feeling that I am NOT in my local Albertson's Supermarket here in Southern California.

apologies for not getting back to you sooner. according to a friend of ours, the reproductions were possibly done in house. he also said that you might try fleet street graphics (clarence silva).

On a positive note (just to get one in)

Ah, actually if you watch the sales Malama has some good ones, here and there. Tomorrow I'll post about the wine, but first I want to make sure I get in and grab mine before it's gone! They don't bring in very much at a time, though they do offer rain checks.

Natural Light at 11.99 a case is consistently cheaper than everywhere else. Small store in a small town is always more expensive, just a fact of life. Centipede if you think you are being discriminated against file a complaint. Checking ID with a credit card protects everyone as it prevents fraud and lowers everyone's expenses.

Also, See ID and Check ID are not valid per any credit card agreement, cards must be signed with a signature. Any store could reject your purchase if the card is not actually signed. That being said, my cards have said See ID as long as I can remember.

There are some things that are consistently cheaper at Malama than anywhere in Hilo. Produce, meat, and dairy products run about the same, and often the local caught fish is fresher and cheaper.

If you want to stretch your food dollars here you have to shop at multiple stores. We buy certain things certain places, hitting Maku'u for produce, KTA, Malama, Safeway, Sack N Save, and Cost U Less on a rotation which gets us to each one anywhere from once a week to every three weeks depending on what we buy there. It would be more convenient to go just one place, but way way more expensive!
