I was wondering why they use police to direct traffic for road construction? There were 6 on the way to Hilo yesterday. Two have been on 8 road for about 10 months.
Also does the license plate stay with the vehicle when sold? A friend of ours had their house broken into in HPP, the neighbor chased them away with a shotgun and got their plate number. But I guess all that resulted was the police found out the vehicle was sold and never registered. First state I have lived where the plate stays with the vehicle.

The "off-duty" cops get time and a half to do the ten dolla/hour job of directing traffic ($45+/hr). It's a union driven perk that costs the county hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

In many western states the plate stays with the vehicle. In Midwestern and eastern states you usually have to get a new one.

Greg, are you sure they get time-and-a-half? I was under the impression they get the same rate of pay for special duty as their regular shift.
And to be clear, the special duty dudes get paid by the contractor, altho of course that comes out of the taxpayers' hides if it's a government-funded job.

Dave,
To be fair and qualify my statement above; Time and a half is what I've always heard for off duty work. I'll have to let someone more qualified research it for accuracy. Please let me know if I'm mistaken;
However; I still feel it's a $10-$15/hr job that many un/underemployed localfolks would be happy to do for less than the county is currently spending.

Yes, the plate stays with the vehicle, and that's one reason you see Oahu plates here on the island, resales. If you ship a car in with out of state plates, then you exchange the plate when you register.
Greg, don't forget it takes at least two off-duty cops to escort a wide load vehicle across the island. <sigh>
