Car rental question
#21
Things are always changing as far as rates it seems. The last two trips inbound with mr woof through kona we used national ... best one day rates no drop off fees.

I do cover the back seat with a blanket. Even though I keep the big lumux in a puppy cut for hawaii ... thousands of 3/4 inch blonde hairs woven into black upholstery (they shed from the travel stress) if not.....

I would rather be educated than protected

As far as what he would say..He already uses swearing words when he doesn't want to do what I ask..Of course I talk back[Big Grin]

Any chance you folks can slow down with all the quoting and reqouting?

It's silly and it doesn't help the conversation.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Oh, and you can even save the rental if you don't need it the first couple of days, (and your car is coming into Hilo) as the Pahoa bus has a number of routes that pick up in Seaview, and then change to the Keakaha bus at either the PKP mall or the bus terminal (all free) & get off right near to the Port, where you can pick up Pasha on the Mauka side & others makai... (most of the drivers know where the car pickups are... just ask them, or post a further ???)

Carey!Sometimes I think that you are not real.May be you are that Aloha spirit, flying over the posts of struggling souls..

Thank you for your offer.I am coming on Tuesday.
Of course,I'd pay for the ride.I have no idea if I will need the car
for the other 2-4 days .

Rob,most of the time I quote only partial.Didn't have time to answer right away and some of the posts are on the previous page.

Tuesday OK, so a weekend rate is out. You will pay a little more for a daily rate then, so shopping around and then taking a look at recent bidding results will be worthwhile.

Since Rob mentioned it, the excess of quoting has really been bugging me a lot, not you in particular Still Hope.
I might even start a topic on it ...

StillHope,

A big issue at Kona airport is that you have to take the shuttle to pick up your rental car and you also have to meet the vet at the baggage claim area. You can't leave the car waiting at the curb and you can't take your dog out of the crate until you have him at the car. Are you traveling with someone besides Mr. Stinky who can go get the car while you handle the dog and luggage? If not, you probably will need to get one of the baggage handlers at the departure area (not far away) to help you. This can be a big PITA. We have done it twice before and the relief of getting Mr Bear out of that cargo hold is the only thing that keeps this process from making us nuts! I am not sure how to manage it without another person to help. Big tip for the baggage handler/pet sitter.

I use my travel agent to book a SUV with a rack (for the carrier) for this leg of the trip. I feel that the extra few bucks is worth it.

BTW, We have found that a couple of benedryl helps make Mr. Bear a little sleepy, as he usually barks for most of the 5 hour flight.

Good Luck, Dan

Thank you,Kathy and Dan.
I am taking this "PITA" trip because of the dog.I have to drive to LA (his "father" will get us there, thanks God).
And we have no one to meet us at Kona.
Though my builder has a guy who can come and deliver us to our house.
His rate is probably reasonable (I think it's $135).But if I need a car for another 3-4 days renting makes sense.
Dan,thank you for the info about the Kona airport situation .
The whole trip is scary.I wish they'd allow me to fly in cargo next to my son.But I don't think there's a crate big enough for me[Smile]

P.S. I deleted and edited some quotes.Hope,it helps.

First, congrats on making it to the island with your boy!

I would be tempted to take the offer of getting a pick-up at the airport. An SUV rate is expensive and the gas will cost you.
Then after getting your cargo settled, you could take the bus to town and rent a car out of Hilo, which should cost less.

I just think it would be less stressful for you, and the net cost increase wouldn't be that much.

Ed to change typo "bust" to "bus" [Big Grin]

Thank you,Kathy!
I am not sure about a bus.10 years ago for a short period of time we had only one car and I had to take 3 buses from work.(SD is not bus friendly). It was 17min.drive by car.It took me like 3hours (traffic, missed the transfer, another 30 min.wait)to get home! I think I am done tanking a bus !
