For me, I like being not to close to town. I go as little as possible. The neighborhood is pretty quiet. Everyone knows everyone (a good and bad thing!! haha)I live currently bordering Kapoho Kai and it isnt noisy even on the weekends.
We have less crime than the gated side (maybe due to Al/the neighborhood watch!).

Being from So cal - I have never been a fan of gated communities but thats me. In 21 years, I have lived in Waimea, Puako, Honokaa, Hilo, Honomu, Orchidland & HI Acres, and KV. Puako and KV are my two favorites - weather wise, but Puako is out of my budget.
